First off let me say that this is one of the most informative websites out there. I have owned many a cj, but this is my first "early" one. It is a 71 with a :v6: , t14, 27/44. It is completely apart and I have a few questions:

1- The motor has been sitting uncovered for a year or more:cry: so it at least has to be rebuilt. My question is, is it worth rebuilding, or would a 4.3 that Have complete and running be smarter?

2- The tub is so-so. will a cj5 tub from a later year fit, and if so what years?

3- Lastly for now, how durable is the tranny, axle, etc... This will be a as close to stock driver, not a hardcore trail rig.

Any input will be appreciated! Thank you :)
p.s i will post pics when i get them.

    Welcome to the mix!
    1. Keep the V6
2.Sheet metal is avail, remember it's an early CJ, we are a proud bunch!!, keep it that way
    3. Plenty strong enough for the engines that your talking about, stay with
what you have and get it running ASAP to keep your interest, lots of project set way to long IMHO.

Oh yeah introduce yourself in the proper section, you'll like the responce

    Welcome from Kansas.

I'd suggest browsing through the tech library that can be found at the top of the page here. Some of the things you're asking are touched on there like the tub, etc.

The engine I would rebuild if it's worth saving. A 4.3 isn't bad though. There's recent discussion from the past week here in the forum about them vs. the 225.

thank you. If I do rebuild the 225 is there anything to look out for, or to add? I've heard nothing but great things about the :v6:. Also the diff's are tagged with 3,73's, will that be enough for maybe a 31" tire? Thanks in advance!

If you have machine work done on the engine - make sure the decks are done nice and level - also pay close attention to the oil pump mounting area. It can get warped and make a leaky connection.

31's will work fine on that drive train. Been running 31's for years.

From your description of intended use, your JEEP rebuilt as stock will perform fine. They came from the factory quite capable.

If you stay whe the 225 or find a 231 odd fire it will be a bolt in replacement without a bunch of fabrication.
You'll find that if you want to do current style up-grades (bumpers, side bars, cages, exc...), you'll be limited and may have to fabricate or modify something from a later year. But for original type parts there is just about everything you could ever need available.
    Have fun with it.
