i’m going to begin fluid changes. Spoke with PO who said it had been a few years. Have a service manual now,?but my research is showing about as many different engine oils being used now as old jeep owners, ha...diesel oil, zinc additive controversies, flat tappet stuff, etc. anyway, I need engine oil and replacement oil filter. Trying to stay original, and recommendation help appreciated. Will proceed with tens, transfer case and difs next, thanks.

I will recommend Valvoline 15/40 diesel oil and a Fram C-3 cartridge....assuming you have a canister filter.

Thanks, it’s even on sale right now at the local Tractor Supply, $10.79/gal. The Fram cartridge I’ll need to look around for. Can I use the Valvoline 15/40 in the air filter lower pan, or something even cheaper...the TSM calls for SAE 40? Thanks again!

Fram C3P is what you need. Not really critical but using the same engine oil in the air cleaner is a normal practice.

I am running Rotella T4 15W-40 with good results, but like you said there’s a lot of different opinions. It’s been working for me though (y)

Glenn, why the C3 over the C134? The C3 is almost twice the cost...is it that much better? Just curious and learning all that I can, thanks!

I've never tried a different part number of the same brand. Looking at the picture though I see a physically stronger looking filter in the C3P, plus a bail (handle) on the C3P, making it much easier to remove at changing time.

Ray , You want an Oil with a higher Zinc Additive. It does help greatly on Flat Tappets , which you have . WIX is the best filter on the market today. German Made.

Maybe I'm wrong in my thinking but it seems to me an oil that can help diesel engine components withstand 17.3 to 1 compression has to be good stuff. As far as the filter goes it's only a bypass system anyway so the best filter might not mean much anyway.

Your not ' Wrong ' Glenn, in fact your very knowledgeable, Sir. Higher Zinc is used for new part break in and flat tappets.

What about “time”? If I don’t drive the jeep 1000’s of miles every year, how long would you go between engine oil changes? Thanks!

That's another loaded question. :D Once a year is a good number. Especially if you don't run it very often either. Start it once a week or every other week and let it run till totally warmed up is a good practice.

I didn’t accept it and went down the street to a competitor and purchased an in stock Wix that “looked” better to me, ha.

Wix makes good filters. There are YouTube videos showing the interior construction of different brands
