    JULY2017:

I've opted to delete my original thread and start over, as I think the original started off poorly and contained too much indecision on my part, with some folks saying I was a moron to even attempt this with the skills that I did/didn't posses. So here goes again.

I bought the jeep 1 year ago (JUNE2016) for my wife's 40th birthday present. It was purportedly "refreshed" and "ready to go" (so she signed off on it). Long story short, the jeep was far from it. I sat on the plan with what to do with it for about 2 months. Was pissed off that it wasn't what I was told the condition of it was in reality. Tried selling it a few times. Had buyers remorse. Etc. Etc.

Then I got over it. Spent a TON of time doing research on here and other mediums.

At the time of this post I have been chipping away at it since September2016. So I am 10 months in plus or minus.

The jeep came to me from Oklahoma and it was OEM stock with a cosmetic refresh. It had the the 4cyl Hurricane motor and the T-90 transmission. Everything leaked. Everything underneath needed to be rebuilt from what I could tell. Steering was a complete mess. So I weighed my options. Spend a bunch of money to build it back to OEM and have something the wife wouldn't like driving or build it to something we both could drive daily (we live in Southern CA).

    I opted for plan B.

I will post pics of where I started and where I am soon.

Just wanted you all to know I am still at it!
What I have sourced so far and/or installed:
    USED:
    1989 GMC 4.3 V6 TBI from a Jimmy S-15 (3000 miles)
1987 700r4 attached and clocked to a Dana300 transfer case (newly rebuilt)
Set of axles out of a 1980 CJ-7:
Dana 30 with disc brakes front and AMC20 rear
    NEW:
    2.5" Pro-Comp Spring kit
1.5" Warrior reverse shackle kit (front)
    1.5" Warrior Shackle (rear)
    ES3000 Pro-Comp Shocks
TBI harness and computer from ProSys
    Painless Full Wiring Kit
    Speedhut speedometer kit and guages
Novak motor mounts, Tranny cooler lines, Shift Kit
LEDs all around (headlights, turn signals, brake lights)
Advanced Adapters steer box, mounting plate, shaft and spud kit
    Double pass radiator
    Tranny Cooler
    Throttle Cable
    T/V Cable
    Accelerator pedal
    Wilwood Brake kit
    Steering Wheel
    Steering Column
    5 wheels and 5 tires
    Water pump
    battery box
    aftermarket under-dash heater
    Remote Oil filter kit
    Electric radiator fan
    Auto switch for cooling fan
    Carter Fuel Pump
And a ton of other misc items to make this work.

Things I have fabricated so far:
    Crossmember for Automatic transmission.
Spring plates (to fit 1980s axles to a 1967 spring kit)
    Bumper mounts for front bumper
Cut off grill shroud to make room for new radiator
    Fabricated radiator brackets
Fuel lines and fuel system for TBI (needed new lines from stock tank and return line)
Other little items odds and ends to mount "things" to.

Only labor I have paid as of 07JUL2017 is for a very knowledgeable young man to do all the wiring. He is 9hours in so far and I owe a lot of my progress to him in his coaching as well as a friend who has put in a few hours.

This has been a ton of time, spiritual cleansing and $ so far. But hasn't broken me or the bank yet. I suspect I am about 75-85% of the way there and still WELL under what I feel a vehicle like this would be worth (to me). Not saying I could ever get it back but.... you know.

Anyway. Just wanted you all to know I am still chipping away at this project. My goal is to have it driving by the next 4th of July (2018) but hopefully sooner!

It sounds like in the end you will have a very driveable Jeep. Much better then spending a bunch of time and money restoring something that will not do anything for you when you are done. Keep at it.

Looks Good............I remember when that Jeep was 4-sale a while back.......and it's easy to catch the diseases called "Project Creep" so no worry........it's also easily remedied by spending more money!

Make sure you get that suspension / springs compressed under full bump / weight in before you weld up the fixed ends of that suspension.........that is also a place whereby setting the shackle angle should take place..........including your steering gear placement / pittman arm and it's relationship to your front axle in that reverse shackle application that is moving your axle backwards which can alter bump steer and effect drive line length.........

Yes for sure! I had bought around 700lbs of bags of rock from Home Depot when I set it up. Had them in the tub and up to the frame horns. But I also did not weld the front shackle reversal perm. They currently are installed with 1/2" grade 8 bolts but that can be moved if necessary. I hope not. So yes, that will be the last thing I do. I may even outsource the steering box and shaft. Not sure yet. Unless someone is in So-cal who wants to set me straight on that part. Not there quite yet though.

Your going to have a great ride when your done. I did the 4.3 in my 47 and love it. I did the factory FI and computer. Had to send it out to have it re-flashed and a new wiring harness from Hollywood customs, but well worth the time and money. You have a great list of parts going into it, keep up the good work your doing, it will be a fun ride.

I used this guy. His name is Kevin. He was super helpful. Hi youtube video below was super helpful and he also sends you a super thick detailed PDF of instructions.

    (517) 975-4770 | Performance Fuel Injection Systems….Don't Gas It, Inject It!

That said, I haven't fired it up.

But for the complete harness, O2 sensor and bung, and the flashed computer it was i think around $450. So I am hoping for the best and he seems like a stand up guy. Another jeep guy in So Cal recommended him to me.

I'm going to check him out for the next build. Although I have already made my mind up on a 225 with a Truck avenger and Offy intake in my 62 cj5. But the Scrambler is right behind that one. Keep us updated.

I'm looking forward to learning more about these Cummins crate motors, but I'm worried that they'll price it way above what the average Joe can afford.

i heard that as well but i also read from a guy that was talking to the cummins rep at I think expo west, that the price would be closer tp $9k. a lot of gas could be bought for 7 grand, although i think it costs around 5k for a crate gas motor, right?

goes on sale on the 29th...

    who's plunking down the clams?

Another chapter on how to sink $20k into a $3500 jeep without using shop labor...

only 500 units for 2017, so that's not a pile if you want one (not sure of demand tho).

    ($7,000 * 500 = $3,500,000 - seems like a nice first year bump, given a `Q4` release)
