I had the strangest thing happen this week.
My wife decided we needed to enter my 71 in the local July 4th parade. The last time I started it was in April. I went to the "Mud in Yer Eye" event and it ran perfect. Go out to start it up and wash it before the parade Sun and it won't start. OK, gas, air, fuel, should start. Poured some gas in the carb and nothing. Check for spark, no go. I happen to have a rotor and cap in my "trail box". Change both, get spark, more gas in carb and it finally starts. Great ready to go. Not so fast. I get about a block from the house and it runs out of gas. Sits for a few minutes, try again and it starts. Start heading the block home and it is starved for fuel again.
Get the wife and we drag it back home with a tow strap.
I pull the fuel line and no gas comes out but the tank is half full. If you remember I changed the fuel pump back in July. I get frustrated and call it a night.
Go back out Monday evening after thinking about it for the night and I remember there is a fuel return line on top of the tank. I have a rear tank and there is not much room between the tank and floor. I grab my flashlight and see the return line has come off the tank.
Spent all evening Monday dropping the tank skid plate and fuel tank. Put a new hose and hose clamp on the return line and put everything back together. Pour a little gas in the carb and it starts up and runs great.
We ended up making it to the parade and had a great time.
Pic off mine and a really nice Jeepster that parked behind me after the parade. The criteria was the vehicle had to be 30 years old or older. Lots of Classic muscle cars but only 1 other Jeep. My wife has a video I am trying to get from her of my friends 1968 GTO, his brothers 1968 Gran Prix and my junk.

Did it again today. It would run but end up running out of gas. I had to add 2 gallons of fuel to get to the gas station. Took only 3.5 gallons once I got there and was full. The tank holds over 20 gallons. I think maybe the pick up line either came loose or rotted out. Now the tank is full and I have to drop it again! On top of that the water pump is shot. At least that is the easy one. I have it off and a new one on order. Do I need to put sealant on the bolts?

Fuel filter? Have you checked for both delivery volume and pressure at the carb?

Fuel filter has been replaced along with the fuel pump. I have not checked volume or pressure, good idea. Once I topped it off it ran great. Down the hill and back no problems.

Don't know about your jeep, but some systems have more than one filter. e.g. in-tank, or inside the carb fitting, as well as in-line, or in the fuel pump.

Ive seen cars with debris in the tank that will get sucked up against the fuel pickup and cause fuel starvation. Let it sit for awhile and it will start right up...until the same thing happens again.

So I replaced the fuel pump about a year back. Is there any way it will run of the fuel pump is not installed correctly?

Fuel pump has an inlet and an outlet....wouldn't work if hooked up backwards.

Friend of mine in high school had a 3B that kept quitting. Turned out there was a rag in the gas tank that floated around and blocked the fuel outlet.

Very strange adventure. It happened 3 times to me to be out of gas, and twice it was with my wife... No (more) comments.

Works fine most of the time. I'm thinking there is problem in the tank. When it the gas gets below a certain point it won't stay running.

Need to replace the water pump too. I took the old one off last night and the new one will be here tomorrow. May try to drop the tank tonight. I had it out years ago but do not remember what was in there for a pick up line. It is an after market tank.

Yes. I was having an issue with a disconnected return line and fixed that. Ran fine until this week.
