I am confused and need some help researching this. From what I can discern, they were Stewart Warner 2-1/16 gauges with no SW or Stewart Warner on the gauge face. The problem I am having is that after close to 8 months of searching on the web, I have been unable to find a single Used or NOS Stewart Warner with these specific ratings??? There are SW gauges all day long to be had with 30-0-30 or 60-0-60 for the ammeter and 0-80 or 0-100 for the oil pressure gauge. Were these gauges specifically made just for the 70-72 jeeps? Pics below for reference

This is a pic of the Oil pressure gauge with 0-60

This is a pic of the Ammeter with 40-0-40

I have a photo of the gauges in my 1971 cj5 Renegade II if that helps.

Thank you Mike. That is exactly what I have been finding for the 70-71. Am I just totally missing something? It's like they never existed in the pictured ranges except for these very few jeeps?

These were OEM gauges, supplied to Jeep by SW. I recall seeing these out of the Jeep and being marked Stewart-Warner or SW somewhere. OEMs can get parts made to whatever specs they want - they don't need to match what's offered retail. The aftermarket parts are likely to resemble the OEM parts if they were made by the same supplier, but there's no guarantee.

I guess what is surprising to me is that you cannot find even a pos used one with these specs. My assumption now is that they only made a select few for the Renegades, but that also does not make sense, as you could buy them from the dealership and put them into a non Ren. There are many examples of non Ren's with these gauges.

So the question becomes, if these are now found to be made of unobtanium and you are wanting to restore to stock.... then you just use whatever is available now and match the two gauges.

Example... since the OEM is Amperes in 40-0-40 and the Oil is 0-60 would you just use the 60-0-60 and 0-80 and call it good? I guess that you could disassemble the gauges and remove the SW etc on the newer gauges so that they match as closely as possible to the OEM's?

Mike Starck or Wyomike, can you confirm the diameter of the gauge? I found an old Stewart Warner parts catalogue that references the "359" number but all of the "359" gauges are listed as a 2-1/16th diameter gauge for both vehicle and truck instruments .

2 1/16" is right. 2 5/8" is definitely too large a diameter. They are both standard sizes IIRC.

Thank you timgr. There have been other posts in the ECJ5 forums that reference the gauges as 2-5/8 so I wanted to verify what I am reading to what I am finding in my research.

Both 40 and 60 amp ammeters are listed for 1972 and prior.
Likewise for the oil gauge: both 60 and 80 psi shown.
No distinction is made/listed for the Renegade model.
    Diameters not listed.

Here are the 1972 and prior Jeep part numbers in case you run across an NOS Jeep gauge:
    Oil gauge:
    928244 60 lb.
    988577 80 lb.
    Ammeter
    948666 40 amp
    928267 60 amp

Here are the 1973 Jeep part numbers:
    Oil gauge:
    988579 80 lb
    Ammeter
    988796 60 amp

Wonder if the earlier bezels are black and the 73's are chrome ??

The '73s are definitely chrome. AFAIK all prior to that were black, 1972 (Ren only) included.

interesting information jpflat2a showing a lower and higher spec ammeter and oil pressure gauge. I wonder what the delineation is between the two.... what determined whether or not you had a lower or higher rating?

Just replaced my gauges in a 74 last spring. Stewart Warner "Deluxe" series were the closest I could find. They fit the same size hole (2 1/16") and i notice they even have an indexing notch at the top to line them up vertical in the dash. Also the terminals on the back are almost identical. And after reading all the stories about how bad the temperature gauge in the cluster was i added a matching Stewart Warner temp gauge.

Oil Pressure 0-60 psi #82304 Got the matching sensor #297A. Your going to need a 2 1/2 X 1/4 " brass nipple to clear the sensor on a V8.
Amps -60 + 60 # 82311 Direct hook up nothing else needed Make sure you are really good here with your wiring methods..easy to cause a fire with this one
Water Temp 100-280 #82307 I left the original sensor in place along with it's wiring. Their was a spare port right next to thermostat housing on the V8.
    sensor # 280ED-F

Make sure you have; crimp terminals, primary wire and before you start MAKE SURE you have a wiring diagram of the vehicle. It makes it so much easier.

There was a heavy duty alternator option by 1972. That would explain the higher ammeter rating. 60 amps is a bit wimpy by modern standards. Since the '73 part is 80 lbs, I would expect the '72 part to be similar in rating. 80 psi is not unreasonable for a factory-fresh AMC V8. My 304 has nearly that much pressure when cold.

The two Crown gauges that Jim shows have different pointer colors - which is correct? I vaugely recall that the '73 gauges have red pointers.
