Is the advance/retard mechanism working? Is there a vacuum connection that needs to be checked? (Does the timing change with rpm and/or load?)...

Are you sure that spring is in the right place? I can't understand what it does in that location.
Maybe use a little gentle hair-dryer heat to make it more pliable?
I dunno. I just used shim wedges on the rear spring perches when I put a slip-yoke eliminator and double cardan in my YJ, with a 4" lift.
