went to Big Bear this weekend and out on the trail my drivetrain locked up solid.
I have a FF rearend so we unlocked the rears and strapped it off the trail (thanks Ray/sdcj6).
I began the tear down this morning. I started by pulling the OD housing and the first thing I found was the retainer clip that holds the special washer was missing. I got the battered washer out and the nut that secures the OD to the output of the trans was finger loose . I took the planetary apart as it wouldn't turn freely (in fact it locked up solid in spots), and found the remains of the clip ground into a fine paste.
I'm cleaning up the planetary and it seems to turn freely now.......and all appears fine.
My question is what else should I do/llook for before putting this back together?........I'm relatively sure this was/is the problem...and probably the reason the T18 wasn't shifting into second easily.

I would take the pan off the D18 and make sure that no little pieces got that far.

After Herm rebuilt my grenaded OD and I had flushed out the T-case, I put a strong magnet on the outside of the t-case pan, right by the drain plug to help trap any particles that might have gotten by me.

Check the bearing cage with the planetary gears. Try to disassemble as much as you can (without pressing anything) and give it a good cleaning. Be sure to use a touch of lock tite on the little hex head screws on the spud for the bowel gear.

I had to send a unit to Herm to fix a gear in the cage as a guy didn't clean it good after grinding his snap ring as well.

You may have to call Herm to get a new snap ring - I have not had much luck finding them (that fit right) anywhere else.

I hope mine doesn't back off. I'd like to know why the drive gear nut backed off. I always use new nylock nuts, and I'm sure I torqued it...

Some of those 4 point snap rings that hold the funky washer in aren't too good.
I've run into a few that weren't very "springy", they didn't expand into the slot well.

I'm just putting mine together for the first time. This thread makes me extra paranoid when assembling it.

Just be sure everything is tight when you asssemble, proper torques, etc..
Be sure all the lube levels are good.
    No "speed shifting".
I have at least 53K on mine, still works well.

They can be a bit of a pain... I just took 4 hours to pull an OD out of a Tcase I am looking to buy. Others have just popped out easy as pie.

got the OD cleaned up, just waiting for the washer and retainer clip to come...........I also cleaned and straightened the lip on the TC pan I'd removed. The gasket stayed on the TC when I pulled the pan, should I leave it or remove and just use RTV?
