My 75 cj5 has the ignition key on the dash, not the steering column. The tech at Painless informed me that the 10110 is the harness for the 75 but with my ignition on the dash I should get the 10106 instead. Any input from you guys is appreciated. thanks

The factory location for a '75 is on the dash. The first year for in the GM column was 1976.

If Painless has a harness for a Jeep with a GM column listed for '75, then their listings are wrong.

I was hoping you would be one the the guys who replied. Anyway, I think that the Painless 10106 is the most compatible to my 75 instead on the 10110. Do you think you could check the specs for these two (10106 & 10110) and confirm that the 10106 is in fact the one I should purchase. I realize that Painless is obviously not the only choice out there, but with my skill level I better go with it. If you do have any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate reading them. Thanks a lot.

in my opinion, based on Painless own descritption, and if you're Jeep is definetly a 1975 model:
10110 = NO WAY (way too different)
10106 = No WAY ( no column switch for 1975, no bulkhead connector)
10105 = Correct Choice ( no bulkhead connector, ign siwtch dash mounted)

Your wires should pass thru a large grommet on the drivers side; bulkhead connector didn't start till 1976 I believe.

not that it matters, but 10105 is what I used on my flatty.

and I think Painless is WRONG on their description for Jeeps.....

it should be 1975 and prior for the 10105
and 1976 and later for the 10106

i will respectfully disagree. that is the harness that i installed in my '75. i had to perform some very minor modifications to make it work, but it was pretty straightforward. specific to the ignition switch, which is located on the dash, instead of on the column.

i don't know for sure about the bulkhead connectors. my '75 (january of '75) had a bulkhead connector. i replaced it with the one provided in the kit.

i agree with you that perhaps kit 10105 is the better kit, unless the jeep in question has the bulkhead connector. i also agree that some of their descriptions are "off".

I used a painless 10110 on my 75. Ign switch on dash. Getting ready to do a 79 soon but will be using an ezwire this time. Saves 300.00 . Harness about the same. Check them out. Painless is nice but saving 300. better.

I've posted pics of the existing wiring harness that we took during the tear down. It seams that there was a wire going through the bulkhead via a grommeted hole but it looks like the wire was cut. There is diffidently a fuse block though and the ignition is diffidently on the dash. Hope this may add to certainty of which Painless harness to purchase. I put a pic. of the vin tag too, to show that the year is 75 cj5, 4.2, straight 6, 258. Thanks again for the help. http://s749.photobucket.com/albums/xx131/Jbdec/wiring%20harness%20id/

Jegs quotes $368 for the 10105; $383 for the 10106, $535 for the 10110. EZ Wiring is $170 for the 12 standard wire kit. Northern Autowire/4wheelingjunky wants $226 for what they call "Willy's Jeep & Jeep CJ5 with Buick/Dauntless V6 Wiring Harness" This one looks good but I'm really mixed up with choosing. I've done a lot of research and with a little more and assistance from folks on this forum, I'll get it right.

Pm me if you would like pics of my wire job. took some time but lets face it all of our time is free! It really made me great afterword. I was scared of doing the whole thing. I have LOTS of wire experence, LOTS, but still scared of the whole job. After I got the harness and found all wires marked, it releived alot of the anixety. I will say it again "best moeny i have ever spent!" Just be able to take the time and get 75% of it done the 1st weekend. If you need assiatance just pm and i can walk you through it. Can't help much with the Painfull harnesses but the ez is the only way it would ever go.

Painless 10110 harness is set up great for a 76 and up. But on my 75 no. Had a heck of a time with the sparten turn signal and really hated cutting the plugs for the ign. switch. It has a lot of circuits I didn't need, I did like the fact that it's in 3 sections, front, dash, and tail. You also get new dash light sockets. All in all a great harness. Just a lot of $$$$. Good tech support though.

I'd have to agree with rusty's last comment somewhat. I installed this same kit from Painless on my '75 cj5 and there were more than a few 'minor' modifications that needed to be done. If you're not experienced with electrical logic, it would be very frustrating. There were some blatant errors in the manual that came with the kit, and some 'cloudy' areas that needed outside research to clarify. If I remember correctly, these would be the ignition, turn signals, and alternator/starting/charging circuits.

I didn't mind cutting off some of the connectors, like the ign. switch, and the extra circuits (a/c compressor, extra dash lights, electric choke, and some others) could come in handy some day.

Painless does provide the best in terms of terminations and connectors (weatherproof heat-shrink ring & spade terminals with internal adhesive and solder and GM style weatherpak connectors). Whether you're using a painless harness or not, or even building your own, use the high-temp silicon insulated wire, and the types of terminations & connectors I mentioned above. The cheap crimp-on terminations w/hard plastic insulated sleeves have no place in automotive applications as far as I'm concerned.

Whatever you decide, do it right the first time and you can eliminate a ton of trouble-shooting later on when it's dark, wet, cold, etc. My painless harness has been installed for 4 years now and I've not had an electrical problem yet (knock on wood)! I've even taken the jeep to the local diy car wash and sprayed the engine & wiring with the pressure washer and it starts right up without a glich while it's still soaking wet. Can't beat it.

Thanks a lot for all the help. Even though it's price is high, I'm going with the Painless 10110. If you have time, take a look at the pics I posted this morning showing our Jeep all finished at the media blaster. I need 3 underbody sheet metal pieces that I identify in my post. Thanks again.

i guess minor is relative to each person, eh? :coffee:

i know the ignition wiring needed to be changed, since the '75 had the dash-mounted instead of the column-mounted the kit supplied. however, it wasn't complicated. i re-used the connector-tree from the original harness, and added the weather-pak terminals to the wires. that isn't hard to do. the biggest hurdle is the color/numbering scheme from painless isn't the same as the colors from the factory, so some studying is needed. however, the electrical circuits are logical, and if an inexperienced wrench like me can do it, well, most other people with patience should be able to do it, too.

a good source for weather-pak terminals (and tools) is/was MAD electrical. mark might not respond quickly, but he will get you the correct stuff. i ended up purchasing a 25-pack each of female and male weather-pak terminals for the entire conversion.

i don't recall the turn signals being incorrect, but it's possible i've forgotten. they certainly are correct now on mine.

although i'm satisfied with my painless harness, i'd also be willing to try an EZ wire harness on a future project. the initial price is much better, and i could convert the connectors to weather-pak for far less total investment.
