Jeep won't go. No fuel. Started out a little sputter at 65mph. Eventually had to downshift and go about 45mph. Then a few miles up the road had to downshift again and only got about 30mph. Finally got to the point of just crawling, then won't even idle. Total elapsed time of first symptom to no start about 10 or 15 minutes.

Put in my spare pump. It is used, but the JEEP ran on it when pulled. Still won't start. Going to try another pump tomorrow just to be certain, but I'm thinking it's not the pump. I've never had an eccentric go bad, and my initial thoughts are that it would just break, not wear out over 10 or 15 minutes time.

Haven't checked the fuel line yet. It's rubber, planning on switching to steel this winter. Maybe I'll find a collapse. I've got two tanks, won't pump fuel from either tank. Both tanks over 3/4 full.

Maybe I'll be switching to EFI (electric pump) sooner than I had anticipated.

By chance is there a fuel filter you may not know about between the pump and the tanks? or in the carb fuel inlet or a plugged screen on the fuel valve itself. I had a hidden fuel filter give me fits once with symptoms very similar to yours.

    Just a thought.

    If all else fails-

Ethanol in the gas makes the needle valve stick. Its because the needle valve has a rubber tip and the alcohol in the gas makes it sticky. The stuck valve does not let gas onto the carb bowel.

Put on a Carter 4070 Electric pump-- it pumps about 5 pounds per sq inch- and will push the sticky valve open anyway. That is what fixed my Jeep.

    Morning Jayhawk,
Mine was spuddering and found the rubber hose was degenerating so I switched to metal line from the outgoing side of the pump to the Carter carb (pressure side) and it works great now. Plus no fire hazard. Hope the carb didn't get filled with particles. Quick fix suggest taking air breather off get her running and put hand over intake of carb once or twice might suck out any debree in carb.

Have you looked in the tank to see if there's gas in there?

Pulled the line off at the pump. Pump is just not putting out any fuel. Not a drop. I'm thinking eccentric at this point. I think the pump would have to catasrophic fail not to at least spit out something. This pump still makes squishy noises when I move it by hand. Last thing to check is run a temp line straight from the tank to the pump and see if there isn't a collapsed line that I'm not seeing.

And yes, there's lots of gas in the tanks - although it wouldn't have been the first time I troubleshot something and missed the forest for the trees.

Try pulling off the gas cap?

I had one cap on SSDutch that wouldn't vent - eventually created a vaccum in the tank that for the world acted like the fuel pump wasn't working.

Hmmm... Haven't, but haven't ever had a problem before, either. Haven't switched caps. Will give it a shot. Thanks.

Try connecting a piece of hose to the line from the fuel tank, at the pump, and see if it will drain into a can/jar on the floor. If there are no holes in the lines and the line is not plugged, fuel will drain by gravity from the tank.

The "no cost" check is to just take the cap off for a few minutes. I hope that's the fix.

BTW: I've seen the cap-vacuum thing before. It drove me nuts.

Common oops for new outboard users, forget to open the vent and boat will die just like you described. It slowly robs more and more flow till it won't run.:v6:

    Took the cap off.

Got a gas can and gravity drained fuel into the can. Not pouring out, but a steady flow.

Hooked up to my used pump that I believe to be good. Cranked it 15 sec or so and it started. Let it run enough to fill the fuel bowl.

    Shut down engine.

Unhooked line at carb, put line into gas can.

    Started engine.

Fuel pump is definitely pumping now, an increase over gravity drain.

With engine still at idle, put cap back on tank. No visual difference in fuel output.

Hooked line back up to carb.

With cap on, ran engine 3000+ RPM for >1 minute. Engine did not starve, but fuel way low in sight window.

Removed cap. No noticeable difference. Engine did not starve, but fuel very low in bowl. This is with no load, just revving engine. Thinking under load it would starve.

Thinking going to try a brand new pump, take apart the float needle, new piece of hose straight from pump to carb, see what happens.

had a chevrolet do the same thing, like to have drove me nuts, turns out the rubber line had a hole in it where it connects to the tank, no leaks, just ran out of fuel. took me two weeks to find it, darn thing would start up after a few minutes and run for two or three days before it would act up again

If you're worried about the eccentric, you can see it with the pump off, using a mirror.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot, too.

I bought a new fuel pump on the way home.

Installed a fuel pump for Buick GS with three-fitty. Seems to be fixed now.

Maybe this is the time to put those steel lines in? HF has a cheap bender and brake lines are cheap....

    Yup.

While I was doing the pump I checked out the eccentric, too. It's like new. Thanks for the tip, Patrick.

I had my mechanical fuel pump come loose one time causing similar problems - ran but just barely. Also a stuck float in the carb left me with the equal an opposite problem - a flooding (and overflowing) carb.
