I've got a '62 CJ5 (torn apart now) with a '66 Dauntless and the Saginaw steering conversion. I've searched as many old posts as I could find, and I'm still unclear about the following:

Will Pacesetter headers (I already bought them...so I want to make them work) clear the steering?

If so, will I need to cut the fenders/tub? If anyone has pics, love to do it now before it goes to paint.

    Thanks!

The Hedman"s clear the saginaw just fine. If the Pacesetter headers are of the fenderwell design I would think they would. My Hedman's don't even come close to my steering shaft.

Thanks! Did you have to cut the body?

Cant' remember for sure which side but one side has a small cut in the inner fender, I think its the drivers side by the dimmer switch.

I put a Buick V6 in my 1966 CJ6 with Hedman Headers. I mounted the engine to the Driver's side 2 inches over from center. That way I got more drive shaft to bell housing clearance. To clear the headers and the drives's side fender wall I heated red hot and dented the fender wall. I did this enough to make about 1-1/2 inches of clearance between the heade pipes and the fender for cooling. I have swing pedels and Signaw power steering-- and the headers cleared the steering rod by a long ways. BTW I have an extra leaf spring on the driver's side front to correct for sag with all that extra weight shifted to that front side of the Jeep-- that way the Jeep sits level with my 300 pound body as the driver.

Hmm...since the PO did the mods for the 225, I'll need to measure the mounts on the frame to see if there's an offset. Sounds like these may fit, with some minor body trimming or "percussion engineering" (hammer).

    Thanks guys!

I'm not sure about Hedman headers but most fenderwell headers for CJ's require removing the support on the driver's side body right below where the hi/low beam headlight switch mounts. This is the one that goes from the outside of the tub to the inner support at the frame. No body mount should need to be removed. It's a sheet metal support that runs horizontal and hangs down with kind of a diamond or triangular shape hole in it. Usually just the bottom support "bar" needs removing.

    Exactly right--

I trimed mine and built an arch out of heavy sheet metal and bolted the new sheet metal arch to reinforce were I did the trimming . The Header long pipes pass through the new arch like tunnel and out under the floor boards. Most just trim out the support and forget about it though.

Early Jeeps have narrow frames and fender well headers are an eazier solution than headers that run inside the frame.
