Co emmisions from f-head

hello,
does anyone know whats the correct amount % emissioned from a well tuned f-head??

I would think that by age of any jeep with an F head you should be Exempted from emissions unless your in Calif or another tree hugger state.

 

My my - you do ask some unusual questions.

"Correct" amount? Some ... all cars emit CO in some quantity. CO poisoning by car exhaust can kill, and has been used as a suicide method. Modern cars with pollution control equipment have a CO specification, along with a HC (hydrocarbons) and NOx (oxides of nitrogen) specification. They are not independent, and all three have to be in a specified range in order to meet emissions requirements.

Are you trying to tune the engine using an exhaust gas analyzer?

 

My FSM gives a lotta info about everything else but sorry no CO readings.

Yeap!!!

 

I'd suggest you look in some modern performance tuning books for some guidelines. There may be a proportion of HC to CO that indicates complete combustion.

I'd presume it would, since efficient combustion means getting all the available energy per measure of fuel.

Never knew that tuning for the gas emissions would make for effecient combustion.
However , tuning for the highest reading on your vacuum gauge at idle definitely will!

 

Yes!, at an idle only though! ... proper reading of a vacuum gauge in-vehicle will insure economic use of fuel under ... umm, driving conditions. I try not to do much idling, mostly driving

 

Used to work in one of the state emission testing facilites.

They really only test your idle emissions, the under load stuff typically has better low emissions than idle.

Boy, though, if you want a work out that's the place to work. Won't ever need to visit a gym again!

 

In my experiance with Oregons Tree Hugger Emmisions (DEQ) Testing in the Portland-Metro area, Getting the rig to pass the DEQ test made them all get much worse gas milage. For example, my 64 Baja got 36 mpg before and about 12 after it was tuned to pass DEQ. Similarly the 48 Willys got 20 (with OD) before and 12 after. The 59 Ford PU got 15 before and 8 after. They all returned to the before milage after they were retuned to factory specs again. IMO the DEQ specs are a big joke on us. If the gas milage is that much worse, then I am burning more fuel, and thus I am putting out more pollution!
Now for the disclaimer. This test was required by DEQ for ALL vehicles at first, after about 5 years they let us folks with "older vehicles" pass a much laxer set of standards then folks with "newer" rigs. I left Oregon in 1989 so I am sure that things have changed there now, I just hope it is actually for the better.

Didn't know that about Oregon.

Here just outside beautiful downtown Furnace Aridzona we don't have to test emissions on vehicles that pre-dated emission controls.Anything built before the end of 1966 is exempt, anything after that is not. Plus they make you replace your diesel engine if it is over a certain age in years. Plus if you are outside of the counties that Phoenix and Tucson are in you don't have to emission vehicles, although that is changing. The boundary for doing emissions was moved to withing a half mile of my residence. Crossing my fingers on that one!

Older vehicles need to be de-tuned to pass the standards and then returned to optimum tune.
A lot of foreign vehicles are not allowed into the U.S. because they won't pass, either Lot of neat cars and trucks we never even get to see unless we get something like BBCAmerica or something.

CJ3b's are still being built in India, but we can't have one here. I for one would not mind a brand new 60 year old vehicle in my drive.
