rear gas tank problem

Got everything ready to mount the rear tank I got for the 6. I pulled the sending unit I purchased out of the box (70-86 cj) but the hole in the tank is about 3 1/16" across and the sending unit is only about 2 1/2" across......any ideas on how I might make this work?

I was thinking along those lines...the lock ring that came w/ my sending unit is to small for the hole as well. I can make an adapter plate and screw it in place w/ a rubber gasket, then drill holes in the SU housing and screw it in place w/ a gasket as well.....what do you think?
how close to the bottom of the tank is the pick up suppose to be?

Ok thanks I'll look again. I ordered from 4Wparts hardware and they just showed one unit for 70-86 cj

thanks Tim....I searched their sites and the pics that come up for up to an 86 are the same as the unit I have. I guess I may need to conclude the tank I have isn't what I think it is (in terms of year/make)....I'm gonna research a bit more but it sounds like modifying the part may be in order

I agree with you in principle ....the problem I have is I think I have a Wrangler tank, in that case the sender won't work in my application....havn't cut or welded yet however

If that's the case it might be time to CL the Wrangler tank and find the right tank to fit the sending unit

 

You know me Don...I'll make this work, if I fab it it'll be fabbed correctly...even a future owner would be proud....I was just hoping that I could find a easier way

yep Mike it is driver side fill. I'm thinking I can make this work w/o changing the tank....I'll just use a filler piece as sdcj6 suggested, if it doesn't work I guess I can change out the tank at that point. "keeping fingers crossed"

here's what I came up with...it's galvanized 1/16", I notched it to fit. I'll use cork gasket under it, turn in place, and should be good to go. I'll put the sender in using cork gasket as well, three screws to hold in place. I think this is going to work out well'

If you want to use a sealant, use polysulfide. It's rubbery like RTV but designed for use in fuel tanks, impervious to fuels. We use it on the cork gaskets on the Bradley fuel tanks.
