Transmission issues

    Been driving my CJ now for the past few days after all the work described in my previous thread. (Which did not include any tranny work). Today I'm cruising along and as I'm shifting into 2nd i hear some rattling around from the tranny/transfer case area. Happens in 1st and second. Can't hear it in 3rd. Nothing pulls different, it just sounds like something rattling around. Might be low on fluids in the tranny and/or transfer case, I've had a slow leak that I noticed on the floor of the garage the past few days. Not sure how much it has leaked while I'm driving, but when I park, it leaves a puddle about 4 inches in diameter on the floor. Stupid question, but is that what this sounds like? Low fluid?

    Any ideas?

    OK, it looks like you guys give the really stupid questions the silent treatment. I realize low fluid will cause a tranny to make some strange noises, just curious why not in 3rd gear? And really haven't dropped that much fluid, at least that I can see, will check later.

    R) No one is giving you the silent treatment. The noise could be anything really, not everything is easy to pinpoint. Sometimes the shifter can rattle because it's worn in the cover maybe, or shift forks as mentioned.

    Everyone has been very helpful on this sight, thanks. From other reading it appears that the tranny and transfer case share the same 80/90 wt oil. How much do they hold all together? Do you need to fill each individually, and if so, how much goes in each? Thanks.

    Add until the fluid starts draining out the fill port. They do tend to transfer gear oil between the transmission and transfer case. Some guys have found a way to stop that, I'm just letting it happen until I have to do a overhaul.:oops: From what you describe, you could be low on gear oil though.

    Get yourself a small hand pump to transfer fluid into the trans.

    OK, went down and checked the filler plugs. The transfer case is still full, the transmission is definately not. Couldn't feel any level of oil sticking my finger in hole. Pulled the skid plate off and got to see what looks like the likely spot around a bolt securing the transfer case to the transmission. Hopefully, I can pull them apart and replace the gasket between the two and should solve the problem. Will fill it again and see if that takes care of the rattling noise I began to hear today. If so, then just need to fix the leak.

    Any ideas on easy ways to do this, or do I just have to pull them apart and replace the gasket?

    Here's some pic's ofthe likely problem area. Just to orient you, at the top of the first picture you can see the end of the drive shaft going from the transfer case up to the front and the connection between transfer case and tranny, I think? The bolt at center left appears to be one area of leaking. The second shows a little above the first area and indicates oil leaking from up higher. Any thoughts?

    You can see all the crud built up around this area - must have been leaking for some time now.

    It could be leaking out of the gasket on the top of the transmission too. You might start by pulling the covers off the floor and inspect what you can from above.

    They are supposed to share fluid. There is a port between the two..

    Yes and no. In reality it's not possible, makes no sense, at least with the T90/D18.

    I understand from reading on this site that some guys are plugging that off?:? My T-case is way full, and the tranny is down. I would suppose that either way would work if both units are serviced correctly.

    I've never had any problems. Not with my T86, or any of my T14's..

    Great advice. I thought one my gaskets was failing too...turned out that gear oil was leaking out of the shifter and riding down the side. Sure looked like I was in for some major R & R.

    Replacing the tranny-to-x-fer case is no easy job.

    On the rattling...do you have the single or twin stick x-fer case? Also, are those symptoms the same in both 2 & 4WD?

    Like I said in the other thread there is a vent hole for the transmission that is above the fill level. If the fill plug for the transmission and t-case were at the same level sharing oil would be fine and would be reasonable, but at the same time would still be also unreasonable since draining one or the other would result in at least partial draining of the other.
