A couple things to consider. Just ruminate.

An aftermarket wiring harness that simplifies the installation and eliminates some features you will no longer need.

Converting to a cable throttle if that makes your installation easier.

Since I'm waiting on tools and parts, I started doing some tub repair....

I cut out a small section, cleaned up the surrounding area, and stared at this for a while. Ordered a new rear floor and the majority of the front floor hat channel will be replaced with rectangle tubing.
    Bodywork....

Thankfully the floor riser isn't rotten on this one.

I'm about 75% sorted out on this hardtop. Someone used up my 8-32 rivnuts and didn't refill the compartment last time it was out  I'll use them to attach it I detest screw holes. Talked to my buddy Brian who can weld delicate stuff ( unlike me) he's going to make me a rod that will slide in the softtop windshield channel with a piece of light angle attached that I can screw the leading edge into.
This is growing on me. Once done I'm going to add sound deadening/ insulation inside. I can see going between the hardtop and bikini top and not using a full soft top IMG_20221202_155131200.jpg

That's what I do with our '69 ... or no top with windshield down. However, we don't get much rain from late Spring to mid Fall.

Well it turns out the bed rails are formed with the backer in place and the lower outer bend uses a radius die. Not sure exactly at this point but between .188 and .375" looks like I'll have to get others made.

Good news is the dimensions for each step look ok.

Finally, pulled the original L134 from the CJ2 down for inspection for overhaul to replace the blown engine. With exception of the cam. I don't have the tool I need to removed the valves from the block yet. But, everything is looking ok right now and useable for a rebuild. Bearings were obviously ran with coolant contaminated oil but the journals look in good shape. Now to get the valve tool and get the parts to the machine shop for cleaning. I'm guessing it will need to be bored judging by the #4 bore. It's got some decent scoring from the coolant ingestion. We'll see what the shop says when they inspect it. The coolant passages are definatly full of mud.

OK, it was yesterday, not today…

And, yes, that’s a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the background; Mrs. B.’s not-quite-daily driver. We have that, the CJ5 and the Willys wagon.

The trip to pick up the 5.3 was 529 miles out and back; just under ten hours with 2 stops for food & rest room. I had at least 100 miles left in the tank at the end (‘13 Chev 3500 Duramax).

It’s an LH6, an early Gen IV 5.3. It has the Displacement on Demand, or Active Fuel Management system that drops four cylinders when loafing along in cruise. That will be deleted. It came out of an ‘05 GMC Envoy, with part of the differential bolted to the (really stout!) oil pan, and an axle shaft through the pan. That, too, will go away, and a standard, rear sump, pan will go in its place.

This one is rated at 300-315HP and ~335 ft. lbs. of torque; plenty for a CJ5. I’ll bolt the SM465 behind it, so first gear should be “stump pulling” power. And, I suspect that it’s 100+ pounds lighter than the existing 304.

    Free Jeep clutch replacement.
Parked for 20 years took a toll on the clutch. The flywheel and clutch plate were both pitted from rust. I hit the flywheel with paint striping disk on grinder. It’s lots cleaner but still pitted.

I kind of looked into this, my 2 questions are, do you use the Chevy bellhousing (without 1 bolt)? And do you use the stock ECM, or go aftermarket, like Holley?

I have a standard SBC bell housing. As you mentioned, the bolt at 12 o’clock has no hole in it to match the block. Novak claims that it’s fine and strong enough, so I may run it that way. I’ll need a flywheel but those are readily available.

The plan is to use the original ECM and factory injection. I do want to replace the oil pan and relocate the oil filter, which is in the center of the pan.

I have a year or so to think about it while I’m building the wagon, anyway.

I replaced the HEI dizzy housing after much frustration with 'some component' inside it.
The last three times I've returned from a trail trip, the CJ fails to start after I drive it off the trailer. So WIERD!
I replaced the HEI ignition coils the first two times and started to wonder about DELCO quality. The fix was short lived. The third time a coil replacement didn't solve it.
I combed the web for test methods so I could isolate the issue. Many ignition coil tests are invalid. I was convinced the little pick-up coil was good based on the resistance check. I did a continuity check on ALL the internal and external wires on the dizzy housing. I replaced the ignition module with a DELCO unit. STILL NO SPARK! :banghead:
Unfortunately, FLAPS no longer have test equipment for ignition modules. I even found a cool ground pulse check YouTube clip that supposedly checks the pick-up coil and module functionality. This test, like so many others posted out there, was invalid. I tried this check on my new dizzy and it failed that test.
However, that new dizzy works great once swapped into the engine.
Had I known how much headache this HEI modification was going to cause, I would have never made the upgrade. The old points dizzy wasn't that bad for my use.
The new (reman) DELCO dizzy does not have the DELCO name on it anywhere, not even the module. The box said remanufactured in Mexico.
I am replacing my shelf spare dizzy with a Cardone reman unit.
Time will tell if my gremlin is gone!
I know HEI is a highly regarded system, and I've had it on previous cars. It's just not as easy to trouble shoot as the old points system. ;)
One take-away: A DELCO ignition coil, a Pertronix ignition coil and a Standard brand ignition coil are all made in China. All three have passed through my hands recently. They all look a little different, but the cheap Standard brand is what I have installed now, and I can't tell any difference from the more expensive name brand coils.
Although I may not totally agree with this guy, he makes some good points.

The cheapening of our name brands really saddens me. Delco, Motorcraft, Standard Ig Products, etc used to be reliable brands. I could make corporate rants but I'll refrain.
