Back at it, cut the old tabs off the tie rod, moved about 3/4", tacked, checked left-right travel in the steering. Everything is good, with much more steering angle, about a 10 degree improvement, which doesn't sound like much, but it's 30%. Took it back to the table for the final weld.
Installed and tightened everything, fired it up and cycled the steering. A major improvement. Here you can see the cylinder mount up over the spring, and the tie rod mount. Done for now. Next up- parking brake.

Moving on to the last thing on my list for this jeep, this year. A real cable-actuated parking brake. I have looked at under-dash mount (no room because of the cage), floor mount between seats (PTO shifter in the way), so I am leaning on transmission mount, somewhere near the other shifters. I kind of got the idea from my Dodges, that have a trans-mount handle, and many other trucks into the 60's have them as well. This is the area I'm looking at, I will pull the cover to see what kind of room I have.
Speaking of old trucks, how cool is this thing? Came on one of the SM420's I have in the boneyard. I'd really like to use it, but I can't find the ratcheting part. Maybe I will put it in the 3B, if this all works well.
Cover off, I started with a mounting point, and the SM420 has 2 nice and easy threaded bosses right there. I don't think a stock SM420 bracket would work, because they were 2 wheel drive and didn't have a transfer case in the way.

I am going to try and use a Ford Model A parking brake lever with a ratchet handle... Post your pics so I can copy!

I used a 70's Blazer foot operated parking brake mechanism on my 71.

I looked at Lokar handles, and while very nice, they are very proud of them. So I found this one from American Shifter for substantially less. I think it will work, maybe a tad long, but should have plenty of leverage.
I also tacked up a tentative mounting spot, needs to be spaced out from the trans to miss the transfer case, and give a path for the cables.

There are some options for cables- Currie, Lokar, American...but I found a Summit for less, and I really think it's the same thing.
Got it in 1 day (!), opened it up, this looks like it will work, (for $50 less).

This is going to my Currie HP60 rear end.
Since Currie uses Ford bearing ends (Torino big bearing), I use Explorer rear discs with the internal parking brake. I put in these loaded backing plates last year in preparation for this.
The internal drum is the key, and I am hoping it has enough to hold the jeep on a hill.

I’m watching this one. I’m trying to finish my rear disk e-brake set up, can’t get enough pressure with the stock pull handle.

Started thinking about cable routing, so first attached the factory end of the cable to the backing plate, then got underneath to see where I can strap it.
I have to leave enough for droop, and this jeep has a lot. So I jacked it up to see how much slack must be there. Now I am going to run the cable over the frame and hit a clamp on the crossmember.
Another clamp getting both cables on the right frame near the transfer case, then started assembling the mechanism. You can see where the cut ends of the cable sheath enter, and the little brass block that the core gets terminated in.

The emergency cable kit is the exact same one Wilwood sells---for $40 more.

Had to drill and tap the brass block so that I can get a wrench on the screws from the top and bottom. Temporarily assembled the cables, and pulled the lever. Seems like it's holding, but will need to get it out on the street to know.
Worked on the floor hole layout, it's about here.
I got this boot from Advance Adapters, and I am getting a 2-hole version for the transfer case to match.
Now to final weld the trans mount, but my helmet batteries quit, then I ran out of shield gas. Call it a day.

Yeah, but at least it was at the end of the weekend. Then today after work I race across town to the oxygen supply house, sign says 8-4:30, they were closed at 3:45.

I used a floor mount cable operated e-brake handle from a Land Rover Disco 1 Donor car. works very good. It's just mounted to the floor cover plate.

Well, after a comedy of errors with my welder, I got a lot closer to finishing the parking brake. First, my helmet batteries quit, no big deal. Then no gas, so I get a new cylinder, still no gas, had to order a new nozzle/hose for my Millermatic. While I was waiting for that, I dummied everything in the jeep, and took it out on the street to see if it would hold. I was pleasantly surprised that it does hold on a hill, and I'm sure I can get the adjustment a little tighter. I did learn that I have to lower the lever mount, as it is too close to the lower edge of the dash when fully engaged, and since it has the release button on the top, there is no room for my thumb to release it. So I cut the lever bracket, moved it down an inch, and forward a little, final welded it and painted.
Moved it into the winter drying station.
I got this twin stick boot from Advance Adapters, I started playing with how to mount it on the trans cover, I will have to extend it to the rear.

I had planned a good weekend of work on the jeep, but that went south rapidly yesterday. A good old fashioned Tahoe dump rolled in with 2-4' of Sierra cement. By Saturday evening I was already on generator. But I did not see any reason not to run the xmas lights.
