So yesterday I finished the transmission assembly. Something that should have taken a few hours took most of the day as I had to backtrack multiple times due to out of spec measurements to add shims or just plain forgetting stuff. In the later part of the day when the temps were pushing 100 the Vaseline, lavender scented....I have the best smelling transmissions around, I was using for assembly lube had turned from semisolid to liquid and while trying to change a shim on the rear bearing spacer I heard a few input shaft bearings hit the bottom of the case. DOH! When I took it apart and went to get more I found the whole jar had turned to liquid. Into the freezer it goes.

Any who, got that finished finally while also taking care of other things around the house and power lifted the transmission and t-case assembly to the floor, around 4pm, where it waited for me until this morning. I got up a little early before having to take kids to school and stabbed the transmission into the bell housing using 2 floor jacks and holding my tongue just right.

At this point, things hit a brick wall. You can install the clutch fork though the top inspection port of the transmission. I tried every trick in the book and the CJ2 and CJ5 forums trying to get it in there short of removing the transmission and bell housing as a whole unit, by their reports it should basically drop in with a little effort.

Sometime around 9pm tonight I decide......hey this is a non OEM part (Crown or Omix from Kaiser Willys), wonder what it looks like compared to the original I took out, the one that even though I took it out of the Jeep a year ago is still floating around on my work bench..............well motherfu........The area where the clutch fulcrum rides is not only deeper but the "wall" on the inside of the fork that it has to clear to seat into the pocket is also much higher than the original fork.

I break out my die grinder and reprofile the area to make it look more like the OEM part and the damn thing practically falls into the place using the string trick from the various forums.

Ugh so close. Went ahead and hooked up the clutch cable and adjusted it, but still have about an hour worth of wrap up to do to drive it again.

Get you some real trans assembly lube - works SOOOO much better than Vaseline or wheel bearing grease or butter or anything else.

But don’t mistake it for bearing grease a year later. It is designed to go away- bad for wheel bearings. Not that I would do anything like that.

I'd never use bearing grease for this job. It's been awhile since I bought this tub of Vaseline. I think when I did my T150, no one local had assembly lube and I stopped by CVS and got this.

Don't use wheel bearing grease or butter.
Engine assembly lube, a dowel, or smash one of the extra needles in front of the rest and talk dirty.

This evening after work I threw a set of plugs in the unicorn Commando. The old ones didn't look too bad but they weren't much more than finger tight! Tweaked the carb, and set the points...this thing runs great now!

Where are you getting the parts? I have 11's that I am keeping on the back of my 67 CJ5 and veryone keeps telling me they must be 10's! I am specifically looking for the right wheel cylinders.

I put the wheels and steering wheel back on my 67 CJ5 ro I could roll it into the back yard and give it a good pressure wash. I cleaned out the space between the gas tank and the tub and found:
    beer bottle cap
    beer can tab
    golf tee
    broken pencil
windshield glass (now I know this is not the original windshield)
    miscellaneous hardware, electrical connectors
bunch of dirt, sticks, and world's smallest pine cone
proof of insurance from what I hope was the original owner (going to reach out and try to get some history)
and - best of all - an old fashioned beer can pull tab! Haven't seen one of those since I was a kid!

Just got back to civilization from the cabin, and now have internet.

I got the backing plates cleaned and painted (got to drill some more holes in the rears to make them fit) and now have to order the brake parts. I'm writing up a spreadsheet of 11in parts from Rock Auto.
I had heard wheel cylinders from a 72 CJ5 or a 72 LTD will work.

Still figuring out which parts will work.

I drilled out the tailgate hinge bolts to remove the rusty gate from the wagon. I’m hoping to save some of this, rather than a wholesale replacement.

Dang… I wanted to insert a photo but am prohibited from doing so.

Used Yellowjacket to pull a derelict vehicle on my property out of the bushes. Terra Low gearing really came in handy for creepy crawly. 20221001_164330.jpg

1970 Camaro SS350/auto. Not a RS so no split bumper.
Not mine, stored it for about twenty years for the once young owner. Time for him to take possession. Too many vehicles and derelicts on my property. 20221002_104645.jpg

Been in and out of the garage a lot, spent a few days in Mexico with the wifey. Still working some of the last bugs out of the CJ2. After getting the transmission back in and getting it going down the road, that same day, I developed a squeak in the front driver's wheel that I traced to the inner wheel bearing on that hub. Ordered the parts from Rock Auto and left for Mexico. They should have came in the same day I got home but a shipping mixup sent it back to Rock Auto, so reordered locally though a FLAPS and got them in today right before I left to work some OT. I spent a few minutes pressing in the new races and seating adjusting the new bearings but didn't get a chance ot finish before I had to leave. But the CJ2 will be back on the road......again, Sun or Mon depending on if I work OT lol.

Quick carb overhaul on the Commando. Accelerator pump was virtually non existent.
Strangely enough, it was running good but it's been difficult to start.
