Hello! I’ve been trying to get my 1966 jeep to run but I’m having some troubles. It will fire up and run, but stall out after a second or two. Here’s what I’ve done so far to try and fix it-

-pulled timing cover and made sure the dots on the crank and cam line up correctly
-re set distributor and verified that it is dropped in correctly (at top dead center rotor is pointed to wire #1)
-new fuel pump, rebuilt carb (done by Kaiser Willys)
-new coil, new distributor parts (rotor, points, condenser), spark plug wires and spark plugs
    -checked point gap

I think it might be a timing issue but I don’t understand why it will start up and run for a few seconds before stalling. I can’t even hook up a timing light because it won’t run long enough to have any use. I hooked up a vacuum gauge and it’s getting about 18” for the few seconds that it does run. Maybe fuel starvation, but with the (professionally?) rebuilt carb I’m not sure. When I disconnect the inlet to the carburetor and crank the engine fuel does come from the pump, and the bowl is filling correctly as far as I can tell. Compression is good.

Also, when it is running if I try to open the throttle at all it makes a raspy sound and then will die. I think a “dead spot” is the term for it. I tested pumping the throttle and looking down the carb and the accelerator pump does work , so I’m at a loss.

Any ideas and help is appreciated, I don’t know what to check from here!

That's only half the story - the pump must deliver both sufficient volume AND pressure. Each one can and should be tested to the factory specs found in the Factory Service or technical manual.

So many "new" parts at once only creates more possible problems. It would help us if you mentioned what engine you have.

But it might possibly be inadequate fuel re-filling the float chamber. It could fill slowly and start out full each time, but then drop as soon as the engine runs. Dirty/sticky float valve, sticking float, crud in the valve, weak pump, clogged fuel line or filter.... A "professional" rebuild means little.

A plugged exhaust pipe or muffler could have the same symptoms as you describe, although it would show up by the vacuum reading declining. Mice did it to me once.

The important thing is to start with all possible tune-up items set and verified to specification FIRST, and only then testing one thing at a time, systematically, step by step.

You do have a FSM, right???

My initial though is its a carb/fuel supply issue from your description. Stuck needle/seat? Float sunk? Water in the carb bowl.

Yes, I have a FSM. That’s what I’ve been using to do the other tune up items I’ve done so far. I will find out what kind of pressure is coming from the pump and also check for clogs somewhere in the system. And the exhaust too, I haven’t looked at that since I got the Jeep.

    thank you for the advice!

I pulled the top off of the carb and I didn’t see any water in the bowl and the float wasn’t full of fuel and moved freely. Maybe a stuck needle and seat, I’ll give that a closer look! thank you.

I have the F134, I put it in the title but I guess I neglected to put it in the actual description. And I’m slowly and painful learning that you’re 100% about the new parts. Rookie mistake I guess!

The low-speed jet may be too small. The metering rod may be incorrectly set.

Welcome from Michigan, did you try Either, if either keeps it running you will know it is a fuel problem. From there it's one of three things, tank, fuel pump, or carb. Good Luck.

When you start it up and it shuts down, how fast will restart? Immediately or do you have to wait several minutes?

Whoops. My bad. It's not easy being senile.

"Maybe a stuck needle and seat, I’ll give that a closer look!"

In recent years I've definitely had carb problems from the modern gas making the float needle valve "gummy" and prone to stick. The neoprene tips seem especially prone to this. A light sanding and cleaning refreshed them.

When it starts does it actually run good even if just for seconds or does it just cough or sputter? I know you said it won't take any throttle application but does it idle ok for those few seconds?

Ill check these out, how do I test this? Just get a larger jet and see if that will make it run?

Just tried this! Put some gas in a spray bottle and when I sprayed fuel in the carb it did run, so definitely seems like a fuel problem. However, when I apply any throttle it’ll still have that dead spot. Not sure what thats about.

When it does run for the second or two it does sound good, no coughing or sputtering or anything like that.

The dead spot is usually metering rod adjustment but.......if there isn't any, or enough gas in the bowl obviously that would cause the stumble too.

I agree it sounds like the metering rod needs adjustment.

    Questions:

You said it is a rebuilt carburetor from Kaiser Willys but didn't mention which carburetor. Is it a rebuilt Carter YF as I assume, or something else ?

You said "new distributor parts (rotor, points, condenser)" Were these from Kaiser Willys too?

I checked the bowl, and there was gas in it. I’ll give the metering rod a look, hopefully thats the culprit.

Yep, it’s a Carter YF. And yes I ordered those parts from Kaiser Willys too, the points looked bad so I went ahead and ordered a distributor kit from them.
