My single stick was pure slop. I went to a JB Conversions twin stick (didn't remove the pills) and have been super happy with it other than some stick rattling noise.

IMG_20220909_140428333.jpg Checked tcase fluid ( overdrive paranoia) its full. Checked the rear which has a leaky pinion, topped it off. Previously changed the jets back, put the vacuum gauge and timing light on for some tweaking. Got the BFG's mounted, now I have 5 tires and rims alike.
Bbq chicken run and picnic Sunday . Calling it good for fall activities. Made the winter mod/ repair list. Beautiful weather today.

Been busy and not able to post much. I'm slated to go to Arkansas on a trip Thrus-Sun this week coming up and was going to tow the CJ2A up and use it. Well about a week ago it got jammed in gear and I tore into it to find 2 of the 3 synchro keys missing one end and one of them had backed out and bent at a 30-degree angle. I made the decision to pull the transmission and tear it down for a rebuild, and wound up having to order a lot of parts. The transmission didn't make funny noises and when I was redoing, the CJ2 shifted great, so I didn't overhaul it while I had it out. Don't fix what isn't broken. Yesterday I found out I will not have the parts I need in time, so the CJ2 is no longer going with me to Arkansas.

Gotta love when they use the ol chisel and hammer for no reason.

So now the CJ5 is going, but I've had some oil burning issues. I could find no reason for it to be burning oil, and a compression check showed 140-150 across all cylinders (304). I decided to pull the intake manifold and inspect it. When I pulled the manifold, I found what looks like leaking occurring in the center port (exhaust cross over for the heat riser/EGR?) of the head and what looked like wet intake runners from oil. The passenger side center port had a huge amount of carbon/crud built up around it, to the point it was packed around the #6 intake valve push rod. I spent a lot of time scraping and vacuuming what I could out of this area of the engine and installed a new valley pan with black RTV around the water ports and #3 aviation gasket sealant around the rest. Tomorrow when I get home from work, I'll refill the coolant and see what happens.

Free Jeep is gone today to get the wire harness installed. So I got a chance to clean up Althea. I have not done a thing to her since I got home from Colorado (except swipe the windshield).

Had to use the hose inside the jeep and soaped the dashboard and rollbar which rarely get cleaned.

Since the windshield and bikini top went with the Free Jeep the cover I had on her wasn’t very effective at keeping things dry. My tool bag, recovery gear and spare parts bag were all wet from recent rain storms. So I dumped everything on the bench to dry out.

Hopefully tomorrow I will have time to put it all back together.

Thought it was an engine oil leak, but thinking now it's tcase. Puddle didn't look that thick, but it wasn't red either.

Anyway - off to the shop for a repair, also having a new oilpan and some control arm bushings installed. Also an oilchange. A year goes by and I haven't even put 2K miles on it.

Gave the '71 its second of the twice a year cleanings.

Polished and waxed it since the hood and fenders were starting to get a haze. The paint looks pretty goof for being 51 years old:

Cleaned up the inside too. It's so dusty on the gravel roads here even the interior gets completely covered in dirt:

Still need to pick up some Meguiar's vinyl protectant for the top.

I added 4 degree caster shims to make my steering a little less "darty". I measured the caster angle to be about 1.5 degrees, so I think it needed to come up a bit. The steering seems to be improved but I have not taken it on the highway yet. I got the shims from WFO concepts. I also used Rancho's heavy duty ubolt kit #RS714. This kit was cheaper than buying the stock replacements on line or at the flaps. The tie rod just clears the shocks but I think it will be okay. The Ubolts are larger diameter than the stock ubolts so I had to drill out the plates to 1/2".

    Shims in place:

Good day on the ‘66. Back in shape to daily drive this week.

New detachable links on the sway bar. Please remind me to remove links before going off-road. They bind a little at full droop.

New bushings on the front shackles. Don’t over torque the bolts it tears them up very fast. Only 25lbs. with locking nuts.

Glass installed in bottom wiper windshield frame I got from BBob in Colorado . Glass has one crack across the passenger side. I bought a new piece of glass on EBay but they are having trouble shipping it to me in one piece.

My CJ5 was quite "darty" on the highway. An alignment check showed it had toe out. An adjustment to 1/8" toe in greatly improved the straight line stability.

I have the toe in adjusted corrected, but positive caster is solving another issue. Positive caster should help the jeep track straight without correction from the driver & it helps the wheels return to center after a turn.

Caster shims are the number one improvement I've made to any of my Jeeps.

    Not a big thing.

While Yellowjacket is at my mek-a-nik for ball joint replacement and other front end work
    20220919_134536.jpg

I had the chassis and engine steam cleaned beforehand. So the cleaning was so effective that swathes of paint were removed. Bare metal remained. So my guy allowed me to come in today and spot prime the bare metal areas. After which, I spot painted with Rustoleum semi-gloss black. Just some quickie rust prevention as I'll likely be towing Yj home in rain.

Finally got a good weather, low humidity day. Cleaned, etched, and painted the 11 in. backing plates. Now to order the brake parts for the 64 CJ5.

So this morning I had a chance to run the jeep on a state highway, speed limit 65. I hit 65 with no problem. The Jeep tracked straighter than a [insert inappropriate euphemism here].
The Jeep tracks straighter than it ever has. I think adding the caster shims was well worth the effort. It is a safety improvement and it makes driving at highway speeds less stressful.
