Yup. Pinto, pretty close to completely bulletproof, as long as you change the oil regularly, and keep it cool.

NP. I'd call that a score, if the engine runs.

Just purchased a 53' M38A1. Ran so well he parked it 8 years ago (at least 20). Need help Identifying the motor. Underside of the hood was labeled 1962 Buick 225. Which would be great if they made a 225 in 62'. Haven't been able to locate any markings or find clear descriptions of where to start scraping/deep cleaning. I'm sure it is either a 198 or a 225. Does anyone here know where to find the production code or any other tips on how to distinguish between the two?

Welcome from sunny Massachusetts. The technical library has a document with casting numbers.
    http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?pages/Tech-Index/

First year for the 225 in a Buick was '64 IIRC, though a 198 could be a '62. I can tell the 225 from the 198 by the bell pattern, but maybe not by sight with the engine in place. Somebody here might be able to, if you post some pictures.

The casting numbers document is great. Do you know where those numbers might be located on the block? Here are some quick photos, can't see much of the bell housing. Screenshot 2022-07-07 184633.png Screenshot 2022-07-07 184750.png

Figured it out. Casting # is just above the bell housing. Head casting number is very visible if you pull the valve covers. It is a 1962 198cid. Right year, wrong displacement. Was hoping for the other way around. Thanks for your help.

To me, the 198 is not so terrible. I gather it's a fine engine as long as you don't need to rebuild it. As an oddball, replacing the internal parts is expensive, but no different from any other V-engine of the era. Usually not a problem, considering the low miles most CJ-5 owners add to their Jeeps annually ... I'd check it out, tune it up and drive it. (y)

Covered in discussions regarding the 198, 215 and other similar Rover engines in older posts.

There it is, as depicted by WYOMIKE!! The parts manual really is worth the money, the numbering and descriptions are kind of painful, but as the say..........

Thanks Timgr...Finally got some time with it and got it to fire. Actually sounds really good. The last time it was registered was 97'. Surprised at how well it runs. Now I just need brakes, fuel tank (that isn't a mason jar), seats and we can find out how it goes down the road.
