While doing maintenance my short side bendix axle is binding. FSM says they can’t be taken apart once installed at the factory. Minor galling on the faces where the balls contact. Any suggestions?
Or just move on to a spicer? Thank you!

Yes, they will come apart. Have to compress and clock the short end of the shaft just right.....have had several apart.
Do it over carpet if you can...the balls roll a long ways otherwise. There is a center ball and pin as well.
At one point over size balls were available to compensate for yoke/ball wear.

Not supposed to but can be done. Reasoning is getting the balls back into the same spot they came out of as they develop wear patterns like a bearing and race, which is what they are. If you have locking hubs no big deal. If it has any galling at all I'd recommend replacement.

The ones I had came apart quite easily. I knew they were worn out, but didn’t think they were a permanently assembled part.

The Bendix joints on my old CJ-2 were so worn out they would come apart if you looked at them funny.

This was real common on the old Jeeps that had drive flanges instead of lock-outs. With a lot of wear, they usually fell apart when you removed the axle.

I had one that fell apart while driving. o_O Needless to say, I upgraded to spicers after that event.
