I am getting ready to put Saginaw steering on my '61 CJ5 project. I have acquired the box, column and cast iron bracket from an intermediate CJ. I was wondering if any of you have used this bracket and if so, how did you mount it ? My bracket is too tall to fit inside the frame rail so I guess I need to either cut and make the rail taller or I could weld a vertical plate and mount the bracket to the inside edge of the frame.
Any advice would help and pictures would be great.

I used the Advance Adapters weld on bracket. It was simple and sturdy.

The iron mount is a Commando piece. You'll have to box the frame rail, Commandos were from the factory. I'm using that same piece

Some tunneling of the crossmember is likely needed.

I used the intermediate mount like you have. I used a cutoff wheel to bring the bracket height down to where I needed it. You will defiantly need a steering box brace with this setup. On mine i have a late model grill so it made sense to use the 72-86 front crossmember and eliminate the stock one.

Was considering cutting down my bracket like you did. Did you take the material off of the top ?

I did this on mine. I'll try to get a picture when I get home.

I installed the Commando mount on my 69-70 J/C which originally had the Ross setup.

    Pic's.

Laid out and prick punched the mounting location, my frame was already boxed in.

Clamped up to double check location.

    Tripple checked the location.

    Installed.

Had to do new hoses to fit under the grill.

Edited to add comment, be sure to insert spacers inside the frame so that the attachment bolts don't crush the rails when tightened down. I made them from 1 1/4" steel dowel stock cut to length and drilled for the bolts to pass through. One could stack flat washers to accomplish the same thing.

The Commando mount would be much more desirable, but hard to find.
The 72-75 mount, not so much in either case.
Mounting closer to the frame is more desirable.

I believe so, but it's been a few years.

I tried to get a picture of mine but you really can't see it well. I took the intermediate CJ cast iron mount and ground it down to fit in the early CJ frame channel. The vertical bolts on the mount are bolted to my winch mounting plate.
