I would really appreciate any opinions on this. I’m just getting back to working on the Jeep after a long break.

I’ve been trying different steering shaft routing options that would allow me to retain the front dump exhaust. (Would like more room around the clutch area for a future hydraulic clutch set up)

I got the first issue solved , I think by using a mount that sets the Box 3” off the frame rail. This allows the shaft to get around the exhaust.

The next hurdle was notching the motor mount. This is where I’m worried I may have gone to far? Should I weld it back up and look for another route or can you suggest ways to beef the mount up a bit?

    Or should it be ok?

Eith way, I need to clean up the notch, but wanted to get your thought

Thanks as always for the help!

    No picture for you, but...
You could finish cutting the rest of the mount, U-shaped, and then weld in a piece of round tubing, cut in half, upside down to "box' in the U.
    Does that make sense ?
When completed it's a welded in U for the shaft to go down and into.

I agree with "jpflat2a" using a half pipe of tubing will make the mount strong, or stronger than before the notch. Have done something similar on the round cross member of a CJ2A, and it worked fine.

Thanks, hadn’t thought of that. I’ve got a small piece of heavy wall pipe I can cut in half.

Beautiful job! Wish my welds look like that. I’m going to cut a thick walled pipe in half and welled it to the underside/inside of the mount.

Didn't 71 Jeepster have a different engine mount to provide clearance for the steering shaft. Think I actually have one.

I had a good friend who was a pipe welder who worked in Nuclear plants. His welds had to pass X-ray tests.

I used to get him to weld stuff like that, and it was always perfect, but he died unexpectedly this time last year. I can weld, but because of him being so good I always let him do the welding and I never practiced enough to get very good at it. Now that I am retired I plan to take a course at the community college.

You might check your local welding supply. Our store here in town offers inexpensive 1 & 3 day classes for people learning to weld.

I can weld sheet metal okay with a MIG, but for structural work I would want better penetration. I have a Lincoln 225 stick welder but my attempts to weld with that look like garbage.

I have looked into it. He are a small town and the only class I could find is a two to four year course.
