Yes, that one is Empire Blue. From the builder himself: My 67 CJ5 build

I believe this is a pretty good example of Spruce Tip Green:

This is the same Jeep but the metallic color changes a lot with the lighting:

Yup, that looks more like what's on the inside surfaces of my original tub. Such a sharp color in this modern world of graytones.

That's a good looking color! Well...my body shop guy was able to find a place to mix the Empire Blue at a reasonable price, so I opted to go that route.

Covid hit my office, and our staff of five all tested positive, including my wife. I realized there was no escape for me at that point. I didn't start feeling bad until yesterday, so I slept most of the day. Felt a tad bit better this morning, but no energy. I figured I'd sit at the work bench and poke around on the Quadrajet rebuild with the garage heater blowing on me. I had it professionally rebuilt a decade ago when we lived in DFW, but it definitely wasn't running well now. Exhaust was very rich, and the problems mostly went away when I dropped my Edelbrock on it. Engine smoothed out too. When I took the Quadrajet apart, the JB Weld covering the secondary well plugs fell off. The JB covering the primary wells had already fallen off and was laying on the base plate. After putting gas in the float bowl and watching it leak out onto the paper towel below, I think I've found some of the problem. I’m sure the corrosion on the primary jets doesn’t help either. I polished up the plugs with my Dremel wire brush, then recoated them all with JB Weld. I supposed I could just run the Edelbrock, but I like the Quadrajet...especially since it had better fuel economy than the Edelbrock when it was running well. Now it's a 24 hour waiting game while the JB Weld cures. Think I'll take a nap.

Not much to speak of today, but a few little side projects. We're quarantined for at least 5 days. Feel much better but still have a cough and some fatigue. I finished putting the Quadrajet back together. That was a bit of an adventure. We'll see if I did it right once I get the engine put back together (someday). Heads probably won't be back for another few weeks. Then I'll take the block to get it cleaned and run through. I would expect new rings and bearings at the least, and maybe polishing the crank.

In the mean time, I started thinking about how to install a stereo. I have some old speakers and a head unit. I think I'll go for the glove box install with the head unit. I started mocking up some speaker mounts with cardboard. I'm thinking some thin sheet metal either welded or (most likely) riveted to the channels. It would be nice to get the metal painted the same color as the Jeep, but black would work too. Thoughts?

I like your placement, but I would think you'd need a bit more structure than just a sheet of metal, if only for acoustics.

It has a little more structure than what you could see....sort of an A-frame structure with the rear cut out for the magnet. I do wonder how the acoustics would be without a solid back. I tested the speakers and head unit and it is plenty loud. I'm going to continue thinking about this.... I could just make boxes that mount at this angle. Hmm...

That's what I was wondering about. Hmm. A part of me was wanting to keep it up front. I've redesigned the enclosure to be a full box (thanks to Papa Johns), so that would protect the speaker a bit more, and definitely help focus the the sound like a closed-back guitar cab. I'd also have to relocate my e-brake handle a bit closer to the steering wheel. Possibly need to relocate the fuse box to the opposite side of the firewall, or just over a bit. Has anyone run it under the hood? I might have to make a cover for it to protect it from the elements. On the passenger side, it will clear my Mojave heater...so that's good.

I have some sheet metal lying around...I may fab it up, grab the seats, and see what it looks like.

    IMG_6159.JPG IMG_6161.JPG

Edit - I ended up playing. Bad news...my welder is jerking. Flux stinks anyway. I'm already a bad welder... Then I ran out of wire. But I mocked one up...

Finally had some free time and got back to work on sealing up the transmission and transfer case and getting them all bolted back together. Everything is buttoned up but the overdrive. I used aviation sealant and The Right Stuff, so we'll see how it turns out this time around. I got a NOS oil pan cover that was in much better shape and much heavier than the old one. On the overdrive, I'm going to have to figure out how to torque the planetary gear. I think the last time I installed it, everything was already connected to the engine. One idea is to use the old companion flange that I have with the same splines as the input shaft and lock it down somehow. And yeah, I'm going to have to get a replacement poppet spring bolt. That was in the transfer case when I got it years ago, and it worked so I left it.

    IMG_6211.jpg

While I was at it I sanded and painted the steering column. I probably should put on a new steering wheel, as mine looks pretty rough. Now just waiting to get my wheels back so I can roll the chassis to my chain hoist and pull the engine, and get this body off to get painted. Back to the waiting game.

As a guy who drives hours in Farm Jeep Willy, take and move your legs everywhere you can up front, in the driver and passenger foot well, pretending to try get comfortable. This may cause you to change your mind about speaker placement. My wife is like a contortionist when riding for hours in the Jeep, I know she would complain about that location. Not criticism, just letting you know what I have found.

Things have been incredibly slow over the past few weeks. I stopped by the machine shop the other day and had a great conversation with the guy that's working on my heads. This guy is awesome. It's an old school type of shop with parts in the front and a machine shop in the back. When I walked in, I said: is Chuck here? And the guy at the counter said: "go on back to the shop." Walked right behind the counter and on back to the shop door. I spent an hour back there hearing stories and soaking up tidbits of information.

The heads are done. He put in hardened seats. He also cleaned up the intake. It was warped, so he worked on it a bit, and it looks like new. I'm going to try to get back there this week to pick them up.

In the meantime, my buddy finished the wheels. Now I can take it off the jacks, and roll the chassis back to my chain hoist and pull the block. Check out that Indian Ceramic poking through in the rear wheel well.. IMG_6418.jpeg

I've also been getting text updates. The fenders and grill are primed and ready for paint.... and man, they already look so much better. I had one that was pretty beat up, and he's got it looking pretty good.

    IMG_0006.jpeg IMG_0008.jpeg IMG_0007.jpeg

Lastly, he got the paint mixed. Apparently getting a certain toner for the paint was almost impossible, so we opted for one shade up. I can't tell any difference - so it's going to be pretty close to the Empire Blue.

    IMG_2430.jpg

    That's all for now...

I like that color and I've painted my Jeep many times. I love the painting. I just don't like the prep.

Yesterday was fun. My son and I went to the machine shop and picked up the heads and intake. Then we came home, and I went and borrowed a hoist from a friend. I pulled the block and loaded it on the trailer. It was supposed to rain, so we covered it with a trash bag and then a tarp, and hauled it back to the machine shop. He's going to check it out and see what it needs. Hopefully I can just do new rings and bearings, but possibly will need to polish the crank. Worst case scenario, he will put a full rebuild kit in it and I'll wind up with new pistons and a larger bore. I guess that will be fun. When the machine shop owner saw the engine, he said: Yup...I think this was out of a Monte Carlo SS. That's kind of neat. After walking around the shop, my 5 year old son decided that he wants to have a machine shop when he grows up.

Hey, I'm finally back, maybe. I've been in a waiting game since January, but progress is beginning. On Friday, I went and picked up the rebuilt 305. I can't wait to fire it up! Then this morning, I dropped off the tub, and picked up the fenders, grill and tailgate. The bodyshop guy had the hood sanded and was working on it when I left. Hopefully it won't be long.

The tub was pretty rough inside, and I just don't have the money to get it blasted. He's going to do the interior with raptor liners and the outside with the blue. I think it will look good and be rugged. I'm not going for a stock CJ5 anyway. IMG_7853.JPG IMG_7854.JPG IMG_7855.JPG IMG_7856.JPG IMG_7867.JPG IMG_7868.JPG

Well, things happened quickly and we sold our house and bought another in one week. It was pretty unexpected. We had no plans to move, but the opportunity to move into town presented itself and we couldn't pass it up. That being said - the garage floor is still coated in Jeep parts.

I started yesterday by replacing the motor mount cushions. I think they were due.

    IMG_8112.jpg

Then I finally mounted the engine and t90/dana18 so I can tow the whole rolling chassis to the new house. Still need to wash the frame and add some touch-up paint, but that won't take much work. The paint from the last rebuild has held up well.

    IMG_8117.jpg

    IMG_8120.jpg

After getting that done, I went ahead and installed the headlight baskets and polished up the chrome rings. The I added the turn signals. Starting to look pretty good!

It has been a long time coming. I picked up the body this week after waiting for a year and a half, and have been on a blitz to get it back together before summer is over. I’m very pleased. The interior was pitted and rough, so we chose to use tinted Raptor liner in the tub.
    IMG_1955.JPG

Funny story. Since we moved to a house with a smaller garage, I ended up storing the exhaust behind some bushes that back up to the woods full of hickory trees. When I picked it up to install it, it sounded like a rain stick. Squirrels had decided to fill up the entire muffler with hickory nuts. I shook as much out as I could, but finally decided it would be better just to do a new muffler and let them route the exhaust where I wanted it out the back corner.

    IMG_1958.JPG

I had some friends come over and help me put the tub back on.

    IMG_1960.JPG

And now I've been working to get everything back together. Fortunately I did a good job of bundling the wiring harness when I took it off, so that's what I'm working on now. The engine bay is almost done, and then I have to tackle the dash. A few other projects and I can finally start my rebuilt motor! Our city is hosting a Jeep night on the downtown square on Thursday, so I'm hopefully I can have it running by then. My son is very excited to take a ride in it.
