I've been trying to work out how to repair the sidewall on my spare since our Moab trip.
This will be used for a spare only so needs to hold 10-15 psi.
The couple of tire shops I've talked to won't touch it. Not a problem, I understand.
The 2 thoughts I have are putting a tube inside or using a plug/patch combo.
Has anyone used the plug/patch combo with success?
Are there any other ways to repair this?

    Thanks
    KM

I’m thinking tube might be the better route. At least you could have more confidence in it instead of a patch on the sidewall?

I’d probably do both a plug/patch and a tube. With the tube alone, I’d be worried that the tube would squirt out the hole.

although I have also seen people on the trail jam a bunch of string plugs and rubber cement into a sidewall hole and it held just fine.

I haven't used a plug/patch like that but looks like a good idea for plugging a round hole like that, and should work if you are going to also use a tube.

I have fixed sidewall damage by using a vulcanized boot and a tube. Had a big gash on a rear tire on my tractor. A new tire costs over $600, so I used such a boot, and a tube, and it has held up fine for three years so far.

IMO, I’d try the patch/plug deal. They are popular with the dirt bike guys who run Tubliss systems and have great success.

Another point to think about, tubes of that size are quite heavy. I’d be a little worried carrying that extra weight on the carrier.

I'm currently running two tires on my 5 with sidewall patches. I have my own tire machine which makes it easy, There are a few things to consider when patching sidewalls that I picked up working with tires in my younger days. As long as there is no damage to the sidewall cords it can be repaired. The plug patch is a good idea but you should still buff the outside of the tire and put a patch there also. Most patch failure happens from contamination coming through the puncture hole. Also sometimes you can find a truck shop that does sidewall repair that will have vulcanizing equipment for the big cuts.

Don't someone make a Radial Patch for side walls, seems like I have seen them somewhere?

I have used the plug/patch before with fine results on sidewalls. On a spare, that would work great. I may admit to using it on a main tire over the years....

Use the plug patch along with the tube and only use use said tire as a temporary replacement

I agree.....Use Both. The Tire shops today do not want any Liability for a sidewall repair, so you won't get any advice from them. It's always better advice here, anyway .

I've replaced several tires because of issues like this.
I like dealing with tire issues on my home turf, not on the road.
To me, if the tire is not good enough or trusted to be on the ground everyday, it's junk. (maybe a roller for a project)
Sorry, but the $$ investment now may save a headache later on the trail when you need it.

    Thanks for all the comments.
I think I will try the Plug/Patch on the inside and a patch on the outside first.
See if it holds pressure over the winter. Drive it on some short local trips, then move it to the spare.
I can always go the new tire route if I don't like the results.

Sidewall puncture is pretty much the end for me. In the trash. JMO.

Find a c****y used tire for a spare, with an intact sidewall. I think a poor diameter or width match is less of a handicap than a sidewall puncture. Sidewall repair is a desperate repair, meant to get you to a shop or home. Again, JMO.

IMHO, it depends on the damage. A puncture like the one you have would be repairable with a patch as long as it was a spare. The bigger issues are gashes, which in my opinion are irreparable under any circumstance.
I would also run higher tire pressures, thereby trying to keep sidewall flex to a minimum.

If it doesn't work, the tow is going to cost more than a new tire would have, and then you'll still need to buy a new tire.

And that's not counting lost time, inconvenience, accident and or injury.

If I had to worry about how much my sidewall was flexing, I think I’d opt for another option. Especially if family is involved.
