I had a truck nearly exactly like this from about 16-28 years old. The last had a 351C/fmx. Unfortunately that truck needed a cab and bed replaced due to severe rust. I ended up basically parting it out to help fund the 75 cj5 build.

Fast forward, we finally got the 460 swapped into the wife’s Falcon. So now it’s time to find a new home for the 351C we removed.

Here’s the victim. Another 67 F-100 flare with an mustang 351w/c4. I picked it up in late august with a bad trans and a possibly bad motor. The trans just needed 4 quarts of atf and the Pan bolts snugged. The motor needed a rebuilt carb and intake gaskets.

So for now I’m working on the Cleveland, changing the oil Pan and pickup to rear sump and installing a summit brand ready to run billet distributor, one wire alternator and a few other bits. I’m hoping to have the Cleveland in later this month.

On a side note the guy I sold the 74 cj to remove the mag wheels for some black painted wagon wheels so I ended up buying them back from him and swapped them into the truck. I’m not sure they’ll stay on long term but I like the look for now.

That was the lunar green 68 f100 4x4. I have another quitters club thread on that one. Unfortunately I sold it to help fund getting the 351c ready and this truck. I’ll probably regret that later on in life but for now I don’t miss the manual steering or very tired 360.

Not much new. Got the rest of my parts to install the milodon rear sump pickup. One of the main cap bolts was replaced with a bolt with a stud on top from Canton that holds the pickup tube. One thing I was irritated with it the Milodon Pan mounting flange has a decent bow on one corner that needed attention. The other issue I see is possibly having issues installing converter bolts with this big rear sump in the way. I may mock it up to the other c4 that came out of the car to possibly save me some work later on in life.

I was planning to paint the motor but I’m waffling. I should and probably will, but the paint is in pretty decent shape. I’m thinking some purple power and the pressure washer should clean it up very well once it’s in the truck. There’s that waffling again.

Anyway next is valve cover gasket’s and a water pump gasket and a bunch of Knick knacks stuff like picking up fittings for the fuel pump and cleaning the old header gasket stuff off. Anna ran a stock fuel pump on her Falcon with a Holley electric pump to boost volume when racing. I’m hoping the cheap 80gph pump will keep up. I found it impossible to find a name brand fuel pump for a Cleveland that moves at least 40gph.

Oh and here are a few shots of the Windsor coming out. It’s actually not a bad running motor, but it’s old, stock and leaks more than I’m willing to mess with. The Cleveland is warmer, powered the wife’s Falcon to consistent 13.70s in the quarter mile. Not a rocket by any means but should be fun.

I had a 360 in a 71 F250 and a 390 in a 69 F 250.. both ran forever.. The 360 had over 300K very hard miles on it and still running when it went to a new home..

That 351C will treat you right though.. I love all the old Ford stuff, but the FE will always be my crown jewel.. Number one on my bucket list is a 63 Galaxie 4 speed car with pretty much any FE motor, of course the 427 would be the one, but a 390 is more realistic for someone like me to own.. haha..

I couldn’t agree more with nearly all of that. And one of my favorite motors I’ve owned was the 352 in my old 67 crew cab. That thing ran like a clock. Cleveland’s are debatable as to whether they’re a good motor let alone a good truck motor. But the 2v version I had in my old 67 flare side was a blast. This one that’s mildly built vs sick should be pretty fun as well.

Even the "M" motors can be fun with a few upgrades.. I've seen 400M pull stupid torque numbers with basically a head shave, a mediocre cam, some headers/intake and a regular old holley 4160.

You can build a pretty stout 400, yes, mostly with good aftermarket heads. The 351M on the other hand, it's a boat anchor. I personally wouldn't try to hop one up.

I’ve never owned an M but had a buddy in high school that built a pretty rad one for his 79 snow fighter equipped F-350. With the ease though to swap an M to a big block I probably wouldnt bother with trying to build one. It’s hard not to make power with dove c type heads on a 429/460.

All the Ford "M" motors have the same critical flaw in their oiling system. At the extreme, I've seen two 400's with broken crankshafts due to oil starvation. More common is the main bearings to go with as little as 40~50,000 miles on them. That said, "M" heads are supposed to flow much better than Windsor heads. There are things you can do to improve the oiling but I personally wouldn't own one. Too many other better options, with better and cheaper parts support.

"M" Heads are almost literally identical to 351C-2V Heads. So yeah, they're pretty good.

Exactly. The open chamber version but yes, very nice heads. And with the added displacement of a 400 they can take better advantage of the larger than normal ports and valve sizes.

Speaking of heads I was leafing through the spec sheet from the engine builder and learned the 2v heads on this Cleveland received a mild port job and increased the exhaust valve to the 1.71” 4v size. I also found the cam card. Very interesting grind with the wide spread patterns.
Similar to the comp thumper or extreme split pattern but with a wider spread.

Well I’ve still been plugging away at getting more motor details buttoned on the Cleveland while chasing exhaust and oil leaks on the Windsor and finally hit a wall. I posted the Windsor for sale, had a serious buyer drive up from Portland at lunch today, and to the rest of the day off to pull the Windsor.

Now we have a storm that’s rolled in and I need to either borrow or buy a pressure washer to decrease and thoroughly clean the engine bay and undercarriage before I install the Cleveland. I suppose more tomorrow, and I probably should order a new flex plate. The summit one I ordered is wrong and the Windsor, despite looking fairly new, has a few lightly chipped teeth.
