Looking to increase my drum brakes in size and have read that's not a bad thing to do. I have plenty of time to acquire the parts, all winter at least. I have a '67 with the 3-speed and 134 motor.

What is a good donor car/Jeep/Wagon to look for?

    Thanks in advance!

    Dan

My 11” drums are from a 73-74 CJ. I don’t think reproduction backing plates are available. Everything else is.

I recently converted all 4 wheels on my 67 CJ5 to 11" brakes, and have done the conversion on several CJ2As over the years.

The backing plates are getting scarce, but they do show up on Ebay pretty regularly.

I have used 11" backing plates from early 70s CJ5, early 70s Ford Bronco, early 70s IH Scout II, and whatever year of DJ5 used 11" brakes.

The center holes are different between Ford and Jeep / IH, don't remember which is smaller, but any of those will work fine.

Wagoneer, and possibly Comando 11" backing plates will also work but the top of the axle flange is different and you have to drill two new holes at the top for which you can bolt on a bearing retainer from a CJ Dana 41 or 44 to use as a guide to drill them, so it is easy.

I recommend you avoid the 11" backing plates used on Willys trucks. They will work, but they are the older Bendix manually adjusted design just like the CJ5 9" brakes. The self adjusting, self actuating Bendix design as used on the vehicles referenced above are much better brakes.

Drums, hardware, wheel cylinders for any of these are available at just about any auto parts store.

There is a good thread on 11" brake conversions on the CJ2A page forum where several folks list part numbers. The conversion for a Cj5 is the same as with a CJ2A they just have different 9" brakes, but the flanges are the same.

Unless you're going for period correct(ish) you might want to also consider a disk brake swap, there's a number of options available & all things considered can be price competitive with the 11" option.

Also note that neither of these are friendly to 15' wheels, 16" rims are recommended.

If you have a single circuit brake system you should take the opportunity to go with a dual circuit master cylinder.

This has been discussed just about to death here, a search will turn up literally pages of discussion.

FWIW I run front/rear 11's without power boost, stopping is not an issue, not even close. :D

    Good Luck :)

If you have stock 15" wheels be aware there are clearance issues with some 11" drums, and some disc calipers, so you have to research which will work.

Discs are the way to go now. Especially with the eee parking brake kit for the rear.

Dan, as Howard says, this topic has been done to death here. Lots of possibilities. Search and read old posts, then ask more specific questions.

Jeep and IH have the large hole. Ford uses a smaller center hole. Jeep and IH will fit on stock Ford applications but the smaller center hole rims found on Fords won't clear the hubs in the front nor go over the raised center section on the rear axles.

I have a set of Ford Bronco brakes on the front of my CJ2A, and they fit fine.

I have 11" Wagoneer brakes (68-69) on my 2A built on a CJ-5 frame (curb weight 2850) And with a 72 CJ master cylinder I can put you right through the windshield if your not wearing you seat belt. It stops like RIGHT NOW. Granted Disc's are better when wet. I found everything I needed for my 11" drums at NAPA but the Spreader bar which I got from THE JEEP GUY I then made a fancy leveraged balance bar setup and use the stock E-Brake cane and cable to activate it.
