I'm going at the same height as yours. It's about halfway between the 2 sets of holes, and the cap misses. Sam said use the top holes, but that does not work with a 5. What can I say, he's a jeepster guy.

My water pump is closer because I think the motor mounts are about an inch forward. (Love you dad). I am not moving the power pack back. And yes, I was there and part of the V6 swap in about '05, so I am part of it. Oh, how it comes around to bite you in this game of inches.

I am not going further until the fan gets here. It's a Flex-a-Lite 15", and I have a 1/2" spacer coming also. But my eyeball here says you have 3" from pulley to core. And I have about 1-1/2". I am getting used to the writing on the wall.

Seems like a pretty good pickle. Hope it works out for you...

This is what was not adding up for me. Engine placed further forward makes sense.
Sounds like its time for an E fan setup. Champion cooling makes a dual SPAL fan setup for that radiator that looks pretty nice.

Thanks, I will look into that. I'm taking a weekend off from the cooling issue. I have so much other crap to do, on the rig and elsewhere. Sometimes I think an issue needs some time to settle in my mind.

    That's the truth.

Just to add some more info. I measure 2 3/4" to from the water pump pulley face to the radiator on my V6 '69 with the Champion radiator so your engine is about 1 1/4" forward from stock.

I had a similar 1 1/2" radiator to fan clearance on the '71 with the Buick 350 . I went with a 17" low profile Derale fan because it's the only thing that would fit. It barely clears the crank pulley and fanbelts and is a little over an inch from the radiator:

It's been on there during this crazy summer and seems to cool fine even in 108 degree weather. The temp never climbs over 195 in normal driving. When crawling in low range in extreme temps it slowly climbs to 215 if you are at idle. If you speed the engine up a little it cools right back down. I would imagine no issues at all with a V6.

I have a decent electric pusher for the front of the radiator but it doesn't seem to need it and it's still sitting on the shelf.

Very good info, thank you for taking the time. I did not know about the thin profile fan, that could be a solution. I have another flex fan coming this week, so I'll pick a direction soon.

Here's another wrench in the fan or more options depending on one's outlook. The blade offset varies a lot between fans. The 19" Flex-a-lite version I have has the blades extending notably rearward of the mounting surface. Without a spacer, they just clear my power steering belt. The 19 1/4" fan I was using on the previous 381 was from a bin in the junk yard. Most of the blade depth on that fan was forward from the mounting surface. It may take some digging but I suspect you can find a version that will fit your available space. If you have access to a lathe, you can make a spacer any depth you want.

Thank you John. I have played around with different scenarios. First the fan has to clear the crank pulley, and depending on the fan, that requires a 1/2 to 3/4 spacer. If I go that far forward, with the fans I am using as examples, I am right on the lower tank and core, because the fans all extend forward as well, in differing amounts. One suggestion was a very thin fan from Derale, which I was not aware of, but, not ruling it out, but I am wary of the amount of air it can move, as well as the final clearance, which needs to be substantial, due to all the twisting we do. I have another fan arriving this week, then I will decide. Thanks to all that have made very good observations. I appreciate everyone's time.

For something more fun, and excuse me for jumping around so much, I got the rear brakes from East Coast Gear Supply (great service BTW). I used to be able to grab these at the local pick a part, but they started putting the vehicles on the ground on the axles, which means you can't get to anything. So I am done with them. Brand new at my door for $175, wish I had not wasted my time going to try and salvage old parts. These are application '99 Exploder, yes I have a Ford part on my jeep. Currie has always used the Torino big bearing ends on their housings, so this is what we use. Also, unlike my 3B, I am using a real cable actuated parking brake, so the new internal brake shoes are nice to have new.

Pull the axles, bolt up the backing plates, re-install axles, torque it all down. Ready for calipers. An easy Sunday job.

Going back to the fan-radiator issue. There is another thread started about flex fans on here, and it brought back why I am using a flex fan on a trail jeep. About 10 years ago Nick and I had just got off the highway on to a washboard road, heading up into the Sierra for a big weekend. I had brand new Deestone 750-16's on the jeep and we did not get a mile before the RF tire threw a rock forward into the stock fan, bending a blade forward, which sliced the lower radiator tank. We were running alone, at night, with no cell reception. After a long story of recovery, and having to temporarily leave the jeep and trailer, with everything in it, we towed and secured the jeep in town, and caught a ride to camp with Sam. Anyway, I have never seen a fan blade bent forward, and have leaned towards the flex fan since.

I had a flex fan that took out the radiator in the creek crossing on deer valley. Possibly driver error (a little too much speed). Anyway I really liked the cooling of the flex fan though.
I did a great trail repair that lasted for years.

I got my anti-wrap parts from Ruffstuff. Nice looking, with some assembly required. First, I temporarily put the bushings and sleeves into the axle bracket for mock up.
Notched the 1/4" wall 2" DOM lower tube with my new tubing notcher.
Tacked the lower tube into position.
This is what the notcher won't do, so I made this big salami-cut with a porta-band. This is the upper tube that mates to the lower tube at a big angle.
I played with how far to lean the bracket, so it doesn't get up into the muffler that is above. Tacked it all.
The planned location. Doesn't hang under the axle, and has enough upper clearance, I hope.

Well...I didn't want to give the impression this project has stalled, but it sorta has, not voluntarily though. 2 weeks ago we went on our annual Eastern Sierra vacation, which is always nice. 9200 feet up, lake, cabin, fish, jeep, canoe. I flat tow my '67 there with the canoe on top.
I ordered some parts for the tux before I left, and had plenty of time to scheme about what is next to do. There is no internet, and almost no cell service, so it's a nice break. I launch the canoe and leave it in by the cabin for the week.

I was keeping an eye on this fire that was 50 miles away when we left, got home the following Sunday, just in time to start packing, getting ready to evacuate. Monday, mandatory bug-out. So I am staying in a small town 100 miles away, with my family and dog, jeepless, with no idea when we can go back. As of this morning, it looks like forward progress has slowed, and they put the mother of all dozer lines around the tip. I live just above the blue dozer line in the center.

Looks like the are slowing it down and getting the upper hand. Hopefully the situation stays that way!
