I pulled my balancer nodes and made made a pass over them with the mill. After installation and sensor shimming the 3 nodes range from .045 to .055...... I really think it would be hard to get it much better than that. I turned the engine over by hand and verified that all 3 nodes are firing the injectors.
After this I fired it up. Cold start high idle holds about 1050 RPM really nice. After that the hunting starts. Hopefully the new chip will be here tomorrow.

The new chip with Randy Prevatt's custom tune came in on Friday afternoon. I snapped it in and fired the jeep up. Right off the bat it seemed to run much better than either chip Howell sent me. I waited for the engine to come up to operating temperature before making adjustments. A couple throttle screw adjustments and IAC calibrations later....... this is what we have......
    PERFECTION!

I threw my cooler in the jeep and headed out to irrigate. The 600 RPM idle is perfect! The jeep runs fantastic, better than when I had the MC2100 really dialed in!

    :bananatool::kumbaya::bananatool::bananatool:

If my wife inherits her dad's 69 225 CJ5 it'll be getting TBI maybe not Howell's but some form of a 1990 tbi.
Thank you for being the test subject and documenting your struggles.

I have permission to share this tune with anyone who wants it. I can email it to you.

Just about anyone who burns chips can burn this tune onto a GM TBI chip.
As far as Howell goes...... neither of their chips were even close to correct for the 225. I tried both of them with the distributor signal and crank trigger.

This tune requires the crank trigger then?

I don't see why this tune wouldn't work with a tach filter, but the engine will never run as well as it does with the crank trigger. I spoke with Randy Prevatt for a couple hours about the system and the odd fire engine. He said yes you can get away with the HEI tach signal, but the right way to run EFI on an odd fire is to do it is with a crank trigger. The crank trigger is really pretty easy to install.

The odd fire spacing in the distributor pickup coil will cause it to see 2 fast consecutive pulses, then a big sweep without any pulse. The older ECM's process information very slowly compared to the new stuff and it starts chasing the inconsistent reading. I posted a video a while back of my laptop while driving with the hand throttle set at 55mph. The ECM was receiving an RPM signal of 1900,2500,1900,2500,1900...... This is with Howells special tach signal in place. The engine would run fine down the road because the RPM was high enough that the ECM did not have time to chase the bouncing signal. This is why Howell sets their RPM at 850..... to smooth out the input signal. 850 RPM would be fine for a race engine with a lumpy cam or a modern car with lots of accessories...... but on a little jeep its just too high. Before I talked with Randy I tried to explain this to Howell...... but they didn't want to talk about it.

That sounds great. I've been holding off on jumping on the FI band wagon. I've just never heard anyone hitting it out of the park with the Dauntless. I hate to say you've been like a guinea pig for us. It does sound great.

Im glad you got the howell kit working but its a shame how much time and money you had to waste on a bolt on system. I had high hopes for the howell tbi until i read about your issues. Cant wait to see how it runs on the rubicon

It would be interesting then to lay out what would be needed to 'build' a good EFI for folks and use this tune. Put together a list of off the shelf items:
ECU - that can have this chip set into it
    TBI compatible for ECU
Crank Trigger parts list and some basic instructions
    Fuel Delivery
    Sensors
    "Other" wiring needs.

Getting a 'good tune' is one of the main reasons I've stuck with the self learning units, but it does loop you into some proprietary parts. The crank trigger also required some special machining that made it beyond what a shade tree guy could do. Heck, I'd even be willing to make some of the basic items once my mill gets here this summer.

I received a copy of the tune with my in-laws forgotten 69 in mind. In exchange Norcal expressed interest in getting a write up going and I intend to contribute as best as I can.

My first impression is to take the 4.3 kit I got from AFI and mirror it with the additional crank trigger assembly. I have not contacted afi but I could run it past them to quote it for us. I don't expect it to be an issue for them to run a harness with leads for the crank trigger. The sensor bracket and pigtail will likely need to be done separately but I will start a conversation with them.

Just another follow up to this thread.
The TBI is unbelievable when it comes to hardcore wheeling.
