A little punctuation is much appreciated...
If you're asking if this trans/tcase combo will work in a CJ7, I don't see any reason why not, at least lengthwise. Plenty of 465's in CJ5's which are 10" shorter.

    ...to you.

Punctuation is like The Shopping Cart Theory. Nobody is forcing you to return the shopping cart (or use punctuation), but if you do, it makes others’ lives easier. You’re coming here to ask others to offer their information, but can’t be bothered to even form a sentence to ask for it. You’re not being graded, but you might not get any respect in return if you don’t offer any.

he wants to know if the longer adapter from SM465 to D20 will work in a CJ7.
even if you're not, it makes it much simpler for us to read, and you will get help faster.
...and he beat me to it.

I use a laptop. It gives me clues about punctuation and spelling, so I would have to kind of go out of my way to spell incorrectly or use incorrect punctuation. If I didn't have these tools, I would be seen as illiterate and not much value added to any of these conversations.

I graduated high school, barely. One of the reasons is that I had terrible handwriting and written clear communication is imperative for future advancement, so when I went to college, I had to enroll in remedial english.

Boy I hated that. I said, "I'm not in high school and I'm not getting graded"..... Oh wait, I was getting graded and was an idiot for making those statements. So here we are, grading each other on punctuation on an antique jeep message board. Sure am glad I took that remedial english class to clearly convey my sentiments.

If you do not use agreed upon conventions of written language, you are speaking gibberish. It become impossible to ascertain the meaning of your posts and we all become frustrated, most of all the originator of the post. The OP gets threads telling you to be more clear and use modern conventions of information exchange.

Use spellcheck and grammar. Its free!

As a guy who has been guilty of a few run on sentences himself I see no reason why this set up would not work. Seeing as your friend already owns the Jeep and bought the transmission and adapter I'd say it has to work. The stock t176 trans and adapter in our 86 cj7 is about 12 inches long. It looks like the SM465 is 12 inches long itself. It appears the spud shaft adapter would be from Advance Adapters and is 4.625 inches long. You do not mention what engine your friends Jeep has but Advance Adapters sells a bellhousing to adapt the trans to an AMC engine. Novak also sells a bellhousing or shows how to modify a Jeep bellhousing.

Even though the cj7 has a longer wheelbase and drive shaft, using the long adapter won't leave you with much length. If the cj7 has any lift, the driveline angles will get steep.

It's probably workable, but the short adapter is a much better option.
