I was talking to my machinist at his shop and he said his neighbor had a '71 jeepster. We walked up the hill and no crap there it was, a 1971 Jeepster Commando Hurst Edition. Honestly it is in really great restorable condition. It is missing some things like a tailgate. It is located at Canyon Lake Texas (Near New Braunfels). Although I did not get to talk to the owner, it is for sale I think he wants $3500 for it. Also It has not run or been registered since 1999. The owner does not know if it will run.

This is not an attempt to help this guy sell this thing but I believe this Jeepster needs to be saved for posterity and I think it would be well worth it for someone to restore it.

this is actually 1 of 100 that were made. So it is about as rare as any type of Jeep comes.

No, but I can go back and get it. I didn't think about it while I was up there. Since I was technically taking an "unauthorized" break in the middle of my work day.(y) Someone says "I've got an old jeep," and well you know what happens next....

I hope this one gets brought back to its former glory. I'm no expert on these, but question the "only 100 built" number. I have actually seen at least 10 of these over the past 30 years, and countless more advertised/posted like this one. I still have a TH400/D20 out of one that got parted, with a buddy using the 'glass hoodscoop/tach on his CJ7. I'd believe 500 or 1000 being more realistic. Check on the firewall behind the battery for a yellow crayon number. I've seen two or three with this mark. Still very rare!

    Donny,

Maybe you are right, maybe not. The below link is to an article written by Truth About Cars Hemmings has also written an article stating the same information. Who really knows though...

"Widely reported as the rarest Jeep vehicle in existence, the estimated number of Jeepster Commando Hursts produced ranges between 100 and 103. Sources also report some Hurst versions were sold as model-year 1970 vehicles, rather than 1971s. Today’s Rare Ride is a 1971 example from late in the run; an indicated number 99 of 103. With the optional V6 and automatic transmission, this one’s very clean and asks $28,000."

It is interesting how many of those seem to pop up. I had a Maverick Special Willys wagon that was 1/100, no one ever seems to know about them and I have never seen another in person.

I do kind of wonder if it is a clone or not. Some have said if it was a true Hurst it would have a 3 after the F in the VIN. Indicating a special vehicle on the production line. It has been known that people in the early 70's created knock offs of the Hurst Jeepster.

With that console and sagging hood scoop, I'd say this is a real one. The console and scoop were unique to just these vehicles. The hood scoops have been reproduced. Thats why I was asking about the yellow crayon on the firewall.

Are you talking about the 1st gen Mavericks with the "hockey stick" stainless trim (later adoped by '60-'64 Wagons), or the 2nd gen Mavericks with the 4 row thin stainless trim? All Mavericks were 2WD. I've parted one 1st gen, and two second gen Mavericks. They were not terribly rare, but were not popular sellers in the day. Who wanted a Jeep Wagon without 4WD? I think my Sedan Deliveries might be more scarce than Mavericks. If you want a "rare" Wagon, try to find a Traveller with the roof-mounted spare!

I had a '58 that was one of a 100 supposed to have the Circle-K Kaiser badge on the side. The trim was all gone on by the time I bought it. I had sourced the hockey stick trim - with two-tone paint that's my favorite Wagon look.

I wanted the 2WD wagon - I had my CJ's for off-roading. The wagon was just going to be a around town beach runner.

There were 500 built. 108 are documented to still exist. I actually own one and drive it quite a bit. Still a rare Jeep. Hopefully someone will save this one and return it to it's former glory!
