I did nothing, but a coworker took one of the seats to stitches.

[IMG]617671524 by Joe with a jeep, on Flickr
She's had a standing offer to reupholster the seats and I finally took. Plan is olive crab canvas over the springs and foam for when the hard top is on. Black vinyl slipcover in a Faux leather pattern for when the tops off.
I need to decide on a driver's seat heater.

12 Year old nephew came for a visit. So, took him out in the Jeep and let him do this:

    20200727_074716.mp4

First driving lesson and once he was comfortable, let him shift into second and let him take the Jeep up to 20 MPH. Brought back memories of when I first learned to drive a stick shift.

Finally decided to take the Jeep driving to gain confidence in it's reliability again. After adding fuel injection. I had planned to do a 100 mile round trip, to get an idea of what kind of mileage I might be getting. 10 miles into my trip I am sitting at a traffic light to a one lane construction zone, when I hear the FI pump pitch increase....... light turns green,..... I made it 3/4 thru the zone when I saw a pull off where the generator that runs the lights was sitting, just as I pulled off the engine dies......

    Back story
several years ago on one of my many trips to Glamis, I wasn't able to use the donkey ____ uh I mean the large fill spout for the military gas cans because the rubber base had dried out and would not seal, It had a screen in it and it would catch any debris coming from the can. So I just used a hose to siphon the gas. But the can were also deteriorating and the internal coating was coming off. After about a dozen or so cans of gas later I was watching the siphon feed and noticed paint flakes flowing thru the hose.....:censored:

It has been on my list since 2013 to drop the tank and clean it out, and yes I have had several times where these flakes have plugged the intake in the tank, to the fuel pump. I have installed a filter just after leaving the tank, but that doesn't stop the occasional blockage in the tank. With the carb and mech pump, when this would happen, I would just stop, shut the engine off, and rock the Jeep side to side to slosh the tank, usually that solved the problem, but sometimes I would have to disconnect the tank at the fuel filter in the rear wheel well, and blow back into the tank to clear the line. ..... (uh if you do this always remember to take the gas cap off first). ...... another issue is when I installed the 20 gal tank 20+ years ago I didn't purchase the matching sending unit. I cut and extended the original one, that worked for about 10 yrs. when It died the company that made the tank was out of business and the now available plastic tank sending unit didn't work with my tank. So I installed the stock 15 gal version that tells me when my tank is full, and when it says empty I have 10 more gal.

    Back to today
So as I sit at the side of the road, I'm trying to remember how much gas is in the tank. I called my son and gave him a laundry list of things to gather up and come help. When he gets there we put in 5 gal of gas, which brings the needle to 1/2 tank. meaning there was already 10 gallons in the tank. That means I need to blow the line clear. and yes I took the cap off first,..... (you only do that once)

Now running again, we turn around and go home. Jeeps in the garage again, I'll drop the tank tomorrow.:banghead:

Today is hot weather, approaching 100°F. Tomorrow it will be over, then storms... maybe.
My son is going on holiday to a nice hotel on French Riviera, he prepares his car from our place, at calm in the barn.
His lady is also working hard on the subject.
Of cours we needed to go to the pharmacy, in the village... good idea to take the Jeep, in full sunshine.
The nice odor of hot oil is a must.
The spy must first go out to get the Jeep.
Then the 1st pharmacy had no products needed. We have to go to the main pharmacy, in the market place of the big local city.
Temperature and oil pressure are OK.:bananatool:
The place were shops are is horribly hot, no trees.
People are rushing with masks for shopping, last day of July, August is the month of great migration, going South to burn skin and get the virus.
That was the trip of the day.
Lot of people are in cars, looking at us like if I was a millionaire in my old smelling CJ5
That's my choice, not a question of money, need of freedom.
40 years ago I discovered the pleasure of a Willys.
And before the pleasure of sport and scuba diving, taking care of my body, I have just one, I won't change the engine (now).:)

I don't consider myself a "painter", just out of necessity~ it is work. The painting is actually the easy work with the reward of seeing it finished (" I did that"); it's the prep, body work. My newest compressor made painting much more enjoyable as it actually runs and shuts off while I'm painting~ my other compressor beat itself to death and I'd have to wait for it to catch up~ very frustrating.
But with Harbor freights (an Amazon) selection of cheap paint guns, just about anyone can "paint". Most my work/play has been painting cars/trucks/jeeps in pieces, not all at once, so a smaller compressor can work just fine (2-3hp with a large tank).
I found that instead of using paint cans which spray a small pattern, you can pierce the can and allow the aersol to escape, cut the can open and put in an actual spray gun to have a nice large spray pattern and quicker paint job(small things).

However, it's a pricey thing, painting is. On the lesser line of paint using Shopline products (epoxy primer, high build primer, base coat, clear coat~ my clear coat, a gallon of Sublime green was 450.oo) I've spent 1000 bucks at my local paint store(not even taking consideration for air tools, variety of sand papers, etc), now if one is painting a jeep in flat green/army green, that stuff is relatively cheap.

Then worrying about safety when painting, cause let's face it, any kind of paint is bad for us~ so good respirator or in my case, a fresh air breathing system (air pump placed in a clean room) I feel is necessary, but you still can't help breath it in now n then.
But I wrote in one of my blogs; to be a car restorer, one has to be able to; sew, woodwork, metal work, weld, fabricate, mechanic, part inventor, and paint. etc, I'm sure there are more skills associated~ and let's not forget, computer searching and being on a good forum like this one with people backing you/us(y)

ps: don't let me scare you off~ start small and work up~ lots of good How To's on the search thingy;)

OK OK, you don't have to do everything I wrote~ I'm a master of nothing~ I just get by~ and hey, my first real paint job was in 1975 on my '65 GTO in our barn. I had just bought a Sears compressor and wanted to paint my car. Of course there are no historical documents (pics) to prove this. I don't even have a picture of my cool car from the past:( But I've painted quite a few cars over the years~ I still feel a little stressed when painting.

3b a runnin, your jeeps are awesome and I'm super jealous of your yard! I've spent a lot on mine this year and it's still a losing battle with the weeds. What part of Virginia are you in?

On the XJ I did a basic oil/filter change. On the CJ I sat in the tub and removed a few more things to get the dash ready to come out and ripped the weird multiple horn wolo airhorn the previous owners put in out. Leg's busted right now and it's kind of a PITA to get around.

Love that area! Someday we'll have to get a crew together for another blue ridge run. I think the last one was 10 years ago or more?
