71 Commando 225 odd fire with DUI distributor. The odd side of the engine doesn't change a thing when you cancel any or all of the cylinders but the even side makes a big difference. Compression ranges from 138-150. Changed plugs and wires side to side with no difference. Can't find any vacuum leak either. It does have the correct distributor. I looked at the pickup and reluctor.

If wires are installed correctly, points to distributor problem if one bank is dead.
Correct rotor with the extended tang ?

It's the rotor that came with the distributor. Customer said it run fine before he pulled engine to get broken bolt out of timing cover to engine. He didn't keep the installation instructions for the distributor

I have read it has to have number 1 on a narrow terminal and some say wide terminal. Both post say it would run right if on the wrong one. I'm going to call DUI tommorow and have them fax me instruction sheet

To make the odd-fire angles the distributor has two pickups for triggering the spark. If one of these pickups were dead (open or shorted), the distributor might fire on only half the cylinders. I belive that's what Jim (jpflat2A) is referring to. Phasing has to be right too, but I understand that won't stop the cylinders from firing (badly).

Never run a DUI - but the short post next to the plug cluster is the one I use - your Number 3 in that diagram. There is even a whole thread on HEI number one on the site.
