    Hello all,

I finally was able to pull my leaking power box today, and now designing a new steering shaft etc. Looks like this is going to be an expensive fix, but i see steering shaft kits that are including Rag Joints and some that are not just using spud shafts. I tried to research spud shafts as that seems like a cleaner option, but they are only a few places i found and the are all over $100 for that little thing. Advance Adaptors her in my home town is one.

    • Is going the spud route better?
    • Does anyone have options that they used that might not be that pricey?
    • Plus my box and the rebuilt one on the way notes a .8 input shaft, with 31 + Flat and Grove spline descriptions, but the spud shafts i have found say 30 or 36 spines. Is the 30 one the one i would use?

I took an old rag joint, cut off the clamping area with the correct spline count and Tig welded it to my own spud shaft. It works well, but the cleaner option is the AA shaft. I am contemplating buying the AA shaft because internal splines and an internal flat are above my present ability level....

Either way, the cost to make a spud shaft in hours/material and tooling is much more than the cost to buy the AA one. The rag joint is cheaper still, but not clean looking.

When a steering box has a flat space on the input, the spline count is listed as if it had splines all the way round. Count the splines halfway around & multiply by 2.

If you count half the splines, and there's 18, you'd get a 36.

I don’t know if he is still making them but McRuff has made some very nice spud shafts in the past
