I’ve got my Dana 18 broken down and I’m preparing for reassembly. The innards are in excellent shape and the oil was very clean so I think it was rebuilt sometime close to when I bought it 12 years ago. Just swapping gaskets and seals and bearings and cleaning, and replacing the parking brake. The jeep did not have an emergency brake on it and I used a nice wedge shaped “parking rock.”

In the old parts bin that came with this jeep there was an extra Transfer case rear bearing cap with the emergency brake drum and backing plate.

Does this “spare” cap (left in below picture) need to go back on the case in order to install the parking brake? The unit on the right in the pic is what came off it. Other than the post being obviously different, the L one is also quite thicker adjacent to the speedometer driven gear.

The other question I have is about the front wheel drive shift fork. In Brian's rebuild video there's a wire tie around the shift fork. Mine seems to have a shift screw. Is this an earlier vs. later difference?

Here’s a screenshot from his case assembly:

That D-18 rear output bearing retainer on the left is for the version that uses the rear parking brake.
As for the shift fork. I've never had to remove the wire or the fork from the shaft.

    Seems you mean D18 or Dana-Spicer Model 18. The T-18 is a Borg-Warner 4-speed truck transmission.

That wire is a lockwire to keep the grub screw from loosening, like lots of aircraft hardware gets safety-wired.
The old D18s from the 1950's usually had several areas safety-wired. I still have a parts bin with those original cross drilled bolt heads.
As Tim comments, a T18 is a 4 speed transmission. A D18 is the offset style transfer case.

Can anyone provide the background on why there's only one shift lever on my D18, and only one shift fork on the shift rod? Was that an option in 1966 with the Tuxedo Park trim?

The single shifter was considered an improvement. It will shift to all the ranges the factory meant to be accessible - 2HI, 4HI, N, 4LO. The blocking pills in the housing make only one range accessible - forward or backward - from each position of the shifter. Jeepers like the twin sticks because they believe they need modes like front axle low. Typically they remove the blocking pills when going twin stick on a D18. Kinda think Jeep did not allow these other ranges because it's too easy to break things in single axle low modes.

'66 would be a single shift lever, but it should operate two shift rods (each having one fork) via some linkage. We may need to see a picture of your front housing set-up.

For example, in your Brian Hainer picture, you are seeing the 4wd shift rod that couples/uncouples the front drive shaft. The other shift rod would be longer and control the 4 hi/4 low. Does your front housing not have two shift rod holes in it?

My only thoughts would be that it maybe came from a full-time 4wd application or one of those odd 2wd applications that still employ a transfer case.

Suspect he's looking at the single point where the shifter link connects to the rest of the linkage, and calling that a single shift fork.

Single stick front housing should look like this for reference...

I think I must have the single stick conversion. The Jeep also has Warm M2 hubs on it, which I restored and put back on.

Here are some pictures of the shift rod and other parts etc: 77B644E6-202C-4E42-A3A1-59B01D25BD6E.jpeg ADA1D315-229F-4EEB-A09F-8A2EA1E95267.jpeg 4E553945-8022-46BA-81DB-472E2BFAE593.jpeg BFA7DB25-319D-4E6B-984D-2243E99F4104.jpeg 47390C5D-6670-4028-AC30-54DFF51BBB22.jpeg

Not a conversion. Comes from the factory that way.

That’s good news - so I can clean it and put it back the way it came apart!

Yep - the motion is a bit complicated. I have not opened a Dana 18, but there is plenty of assembly advice here, as needed. If you put it together right, it will shift front to back 2HI - 4HI - N - 4LO.

That’s what I thought, that sticker is on my dashboard.

There have been so many things on this jeep that the previous owner rebuilt in his own special way, I’m glad this is not one of them.

@TIm E question about your paint - was there a reason you went grey?

    on a D 18
removing pill when converting to twin stick will get you 2 wheel drive low ( rear only )
I could be wrong but a D 20 could get front wheel drive only with a twin stick set up

Paint to a color of your choosing...dark colors like black make it harder to see leaking oil, and might be a bad thing in terms knowing when something is having an issue. Mine is black - and I use the size of the drip puddle to judge if its having a massive failure.

I can't answer for Tim E, but in my experience, it's easier to see leaks in lighter colored drivetrains vs. black. I painted mine detroit green (similar to the green on the dauntless 225.)

Another reason that hasn't been mentioned yet about twin stick vs. single stick, is that when the linkages start to wear out, it's a lot harder to shift a single stick. The twin stick shifters have solid engagement and you KNOW it's in there.

Can confirm. Not applicable here, but going twin stick with the pill removed on a D20, the left shifter operates the rear axle, the right shifter operates the front, totally independent of each other.
