OTH, some early vintage cars (including Rolls Royce, etc) had TWO complete ignition systems, even twin spark plugs. Kind of like aircraft.

Was not aware of that.

    I've been :schooled: :)

But the reason aircraft have two plugs is that the pistons/cahmbers are so (#$@$ big across they need two plugs spaced as far apart as possible to get all the mixture to light off at the right time.

    You've been :schooled: :D

Don't forget the real reason...two plugs per cyl means you won't be the first ones to the crash sight when one fails.

I had a 1940 Nash Ambassador with a straight 8 and it had dual sparks plugs and wires coming from one HUGE dizzy cap. we pulled one set of the wire off to see what how the motor would perform and the motor dropped 300 RPM and was sluggish on quick throttle. A very interesting motor.

Didn't know that, although some Harley guys do go with twin plugs for supposed performance.

When I've flown in small planes the pilot always did a pre-flight check of one magneto, then the other, comparing rpm. I assumed that they were redundant systems for safety reasons.

Thats one benefit but you may have noticed that when he do the mag checks rpm dropped off when running on only one.
