Today I was able to complete a couple of things. I installed the correct side marker/reflector on the right rear.

Then on to fixing the JEEP LEAN. The driver's side was low by IDK how much but enough that I could see it when I was viewing from behind. Mounting the spare fixed it a little but it was still over an inch difference measuring the back corner to the floor in the garage. I installed the narrow spacer I had removed from the front of my Dispatcher 100.

Once I buttoned it all up it measured exactly 21 1/8 on both sides. At least it will look good standing still.(y)

Today I worked on the window channel for the sliding windows on the hard top. I found replacement channel at Rock Auto and did both windows for $50. The old channel was metal - some sort of spring steel that had rubber and felt inside for the windows to slide on. The outside edge was stainless steel. The spring steel had rusted to dust. I was surprised it did not rust the top.

Cross section of the new and old channel.

Disassembled. I cleaned primed and painted inside the frame before applying new channel.

    Driver's side complete.

The angle on the outside keeps the front glass stationary. On the inside the hinge flips over the channel to lock the window. Only the rear section moves. The glass was so dirty it had to be polished with a stainless steel kitchen scrubber. My wife was impressed with how you can see through the glass. Windows work great and do not rattle. :) That is a real plus.

Also new points, condenser and rotor along with timing and idle set this weekend. putt putt putt. Actually I bought a new timing light just for this. Hooked it up and the timing was right on. Lucky for me the PO had retained the tag identifying the distributor. Makes a difference on setting the timing. I shot a bit of oil in the distributor oil hole. When I opened the little spring loaded door the dust coming out made me sneeze. :ill: I may be the first one to have ever oiled it.

Installed a new wiper arm a few days ago. Fit like new and now both wipers stay on the vehicle. Same wiper arm as CJ5.

Yesterday, installed a steering stabilizer and new shocks. Handles so much better.
Put the rears on today. I think it's hot. Even in the shade.

Thanks. This is a pretty easy project. Just fix a little of this and that. That's my speed. ;)

Am amazed of how many barn finds are out there. You have taken the step-sister and transformed that jeep to cinderella. You did a great job.!!

The hood prop socket was a little stretched so rather than throwing the prop away I worked on it a little.
I removed the plate and made an attempt to bend the stretched metal back to the center so the ball wouldn't slip through and the rod fall out. I put it back together with a little grease so it would work a little smoother in the socket.

So much better than listening to the rod bounce around behind the front seat. :bananatool:

Any plans to convert to 4W Drive? I assume its possible but lots of work and added expense. You've done a super job on this jeep. Thanks for all the great pics.

This is a Jeep made for going to the city or visiting friends. It is really the old look, vintage. Looks like a new or recent one. Good success.
I use mine for shopping, going to my neighbours, some trips in summer by the fields but no fast running or big travel. And I like the look vintage, nice cool driving, a little bit like with an old motorcycle.

This JEEP has always been hard to start and ran rich no matter what adjustments were made. The last two times it was out I couldn't keep it running and couldn't get a block from the house.
I bought a YF rebuild kit from Mikes Carburetor.
Welcome to Mike's Carburetor Parts - Your Number 1 Carburetor Parts Store
This kit had everything I needed. He also has an old video on you tube which was great to watch for reassembly.

I removed and rebuilt the carburetor. It was pretty straight forward. Here are some photos and my comment on final adjustments at the end.

I installed the rebuilt carb but it would not start. Added a shot of fuel to the throat and it fired but wouldn't stay running. I looked at the see through filter but couldn't see gas.... I cracked the fuel line and turned the key on. (Electric fuel pump) no fuel but the pump was running. Put about a gallon of gas in the tank and tried again. It started right up and really ran smooth. I let it run a while and tweaked the mixture but the original setting was great.
Took it to get some alcohol free fuel and added about 10 gallons.

I drove all over town and took it back in the pastures behind our house. It ran better than ever over the 15 miles or so that I drove it.
Altgough I was actually out of gas :banghead:the carb needed a rebuild.:bananatool:

Cut the knee knockers off the front bumper today.

I will say this. I appreciate the folks that can weld. You really see the weld quality when you cut something off. These were well done. Too bad the PO couldn’t find the tow bar. I might have kept them.

    Mark,

This thread is one of those that brought me to this forum. I have an interest in military vehicles as well as Jeeps. The sticker on Rattletrap says manufactured by Kaiser Jeep Corporation Aug '70 and is a model 1969 DJ-5A. I didn't know that at the same time Jeep was still building DJ-5s.

I have been working on my Placebo Heater. The heater core was bypassed and obviously it was leaking. I unsuccessfully tried to repair the core and ended up purchasing one from eBay. I also purchased the fresh air hose and got both of those installed today along with changing the antifreeze.
I had to remove the headlight bucket to get the hose to go on the air inlet. That is about the most difficult thing to get to and install.

Still have to get some vacuum lines to see if the controls work inside. If not I will adjust manually. More to come.

Ah take the headlight out. Good to know. My hose has been missing the whole time I've owned my DJ, but eventually I'll put that hose on, Always great to see progress on an old Jeep.

yes. Put a folded towel on the floor to kneel on. One hand through the headlight hole and the other fighting the bottom from below. I'm sure it must be easier on the earlier grille.
