I looked at the transmission after getting it home and it has t18-1b (?) stamped on the passenger side, has an adapter between the bell housing and transmission and has a pto cover on the drivers side.
Question 1: how do i tell if this has a factory t18?
Question 2: what wheels are on it?
Question 3: has anyone seen this spare tire storage box thing on the back? was it homemade or was it something commercially available.
    please share any other thoughts

Looks factory to me. There were some T-18 4-speeds put in 1971 models with the V6, not many though. The floor plates are distinctive - some better pictures would help. This is the close ratio T-18, with a 4.02 1st (not the "granny gear" transmission), same as Jeep used in the 1972-76 Jeeps with 232 or 258 inline 6. The T18-1B cast into the case does not tell you anything, other than it's a T-18. WG DIV is Warner Gear Division of Borg-Warner.

Can't say anything about the wheels. A better picture mght help. I suspect they are some aftermarket wheels of some type.

    Homemade box, seems certain.

A '71 should have the rear tank. Under seat tank could have been added.

Heres some better pics of the transmission cover and wheels.

Any idea how many 71’s came with the V6 and t18? It appears that this one also has 4.88s and a limited slip rear (according to the tags on the diff cover).

This one has the rear tank and under the drivers seat as well.

    Thanks again. 869FD06C-C821-4B28-8ED4-A7FE62CFC75E.jpeg 4AD61FE1-F21A-4F4F-9131-AE4902E6E224.jpeg 02A2119D-7207-477F-9AFF-79DD8EF4C726.jpeg

Welcome from Michigan. That is an interesting Jeep you have there, a great start, a lot to work with. That body looks in good shape, that is half the battle, most of us have replace parts or all the tube, I used three bodies to fix mine. I like the idea that you have two gas tanks. Does it have a tailgate, behind the boxes? I like the 71's, it's the last of the old Jeeps and the beginning of the next generation Jeeps. You done Good, as far as I am concerned, you will years of fun with your new, old Jeep. Good Luck.

Renegade green color? Does it happen to have a skid plate on the engine oil pan?

Just a WAG, from the maybe half-dozen that have shown up here: 75? 100? 150? Something like that.
4.88s are cool. The axle should be a flanged Dana 44 with a Dana TracLock.

Could be factory wheels from another manufacturer. Not many used the 5 on 5.5" pattern; Dodge, Ford, Jeep, IHC, Suzuki, any others? Ramcharger or Trailduster wheels? And the center looks specific to a 4x4 venicle, since the center hole is large to clear the hub, and the edge is rolled up like it was made that way, not cut out.

These are similar but chrome and the center is shaped different. The slots look the same. Could be IHC.

The auction for this one was in west Texas and from the pics it looked solid, with only surface rust and looked like it had been a hunting/ranch jeep its whole life. Its hard when your looking at pictures only but I took a chance.
First thing I did after driving 900 miles to pick it up was look at the hat channels and was relieved to see they were all solid. She has surface rust but thats about it. I then checked the rear for ratio and then saw the limited slip tag as well.
The tailgate looks new on it, no bends or dents. It looks like it has Jeep stamped into it as well.
No skid plate on the oil pan.
The color on the tag is listed as 999.
Another question: do these seats look original?
    Thanks again for all the help[/ATTACH] E9EB106A-DF24-4F4D-81A8-5D77BB30D8BF.jpeg B8D99C93-9C4B-49D3-8F7D-56FD9E01D097.jpeg 578186D2-7C41-402F-B4C9-1174BE1CC0B3.jpeg

    999 = Renegade.

    If a Renegade, it's a Ren 1 with a tailgate. Is this surprising for a '71? I thought the Ren 1 was 70-ish and Ren 2 71-ish.

Recovered factory seats, assuming the passenger seat folds.

    BTW no doubt factory 4-speed.

Nice find. A look at the VIN would tell a lot about manuf. date and so on. Definitely in the transition era 1970-71.Like to have that throttle pedal. mike

Wow! very nice find. Enjoy!!! Can't wait to see your vin and build date Todd.

Mike, I have this pedal with Jeep on it as well. My buddy has a Mar 71 (vin 371726) that was special ordered (he has original order sheet) and was built 1459 before my Mar 71 (vin373185) his does not have this pedal, but his was a special ordered T18 though :) .

    Here’s the vin tags.

    Yes, the passenger seat folds.

Even have an am radio no clue where the speakers are though.

It has a heater and defroster as well. Was that factory?
    Thanks!

LMAO I was wondering the same thing. Look at the last pic in post #8. It has to be the way the camera is handling lighting. Just behind the passenger front seat you can see the green in the shadow and the rest has the yellow tint.

Also - the cadmium pigments (red, yellow) fade a lot when exposed to sunlight. Could be the dash is a lot more weathered than under the hood, and that the yellow pigment has selectively faded. Also, could be a flash under the hood, or low light vs full sun? Agreeing, color balance of a digital camera changes with lighting.

There was a factory heater in 1971. IIRC it was optional in the earliest years? You probably could have deleted it on special order, but that seems unlikely for a Jeep as well equipped as this one.

Who knows about these early CJ's . Wish someone would repop that accelerator pedal. my vin is 8305017 3737xx march '71 I guess you could call the sept. 1970 manuf. a 70 model or '71 model .No designation in vin for model year so dealer could take some libertys on the title. I have seen this many times on the early cj's.mike

Another odd thing is that it has the side spare tire carrier bolts? I thought the Renegades did not have these as they had swing out carriers? Also as mentioned above, no oil pan skid plate (although it could have been replaced or removed by the PO as was often done). And finally, all three of the CJ5's I have seen with the factory T18 all had overdrives including my friends (his is actually listed on the purchase order)

Mike, and only 500ish Cj's built in between us in Mar of 71 and I have the tailgate.

I think some of those pictures look more yellow than others because I turned on the sodium lights and they hadn’t warmed up completely. The paint fade doesn’t help either and it’s definitely faded!

My April of 71 has this gas pedal. I also thought the 999 meant special not necessarily Renegade.
