    We’re the Dana 20 transfer cases painted from the factory, I see no sign of paint on mine

    No, case not painted, pan was black as I recall.

    There is no red paint on mine, whatsoever, maybe a different year? I have seen some red ones though!

    My time with Jeep was the early '70s, and I don't recall ever seeing a painted manual transmission or transfer case. Maybe. Somehow I think the service transmissions came through with the case painted ... maybe not. It's not something that's documented anywhere, AFAIK. I would think looking at your Jeep is the best documentation of itself.

    I've always painted the cases black when I've had them out. Chassis and under-car parts are usually painted black so that they are less visible when looking at the whole car. You don't want to distract from the stylish and shiny painted body panels!
