So I had to look back in pictures to get dates.
Bought in early ‘08 and put a few months into it, then it sat in pieces until I started this thread in ‘15.

I’ve owned it for 11 years, but have only really been working on it (on and off) for 4 1/2 years. Does that help ease the pain? :coffee:

I started this morning by hooking power to the harness with defeating results. I turned the key to the accessories position and blew a horn fuse. Turned it to the run position and the fuel pumps didn’t prime. Tried to turn it over and I got nothing but relay clicks.

The horn wire was touching a ground, the fuel pumps would run if jumped (the main pump leaks like a sprinkler), but I couldn’t figure out the no-power to the starter solenoid.

After a half hour of jumping and testing wires, I realized, duh. This harness is from an automatic. Check the park override switch. I traced the wires to the switch and made sure it was in “park.” Boom. It cranked. Check for spark.

An ode to the Bad Obsession guys...

The cam is getting great oil flow, it has good spark, so I put the plugs back in.

I figured out that the fuel pumps’ “prime” function isn’t working (they should run for a second with the key in the “on” position). They only work while cranking (and hopefully while running). That will need addressed. I wrapped the pump in a rag to contain the spray and cranked it over.

I was flinching because I was standing right next to an open header and was fully expecting a backfire.

I think the fuel pump is leaking so much that it isn’t building enough pressure. Auto Zone will have a cheap one here by tomorrow morning. Try again tomorrow!

You can throw a momentary switch on the park/neutral safety circuit and hide it under the dash or somewhere for a theft deterrent device. I was going to do just that with my little Buick engine only to find out the GM OBD1 ECM doesn't care if the car is in park or not... so I have a random, unmarked momentary switch on my dash for no reason whatsoever, but it would work great for you.:)

I hit the back of my hand with the knotted wire wheel last week and it was bleeding all over after I bumped it this morning. I stuck a paper towel inside a glove for a quick bandaid.

I’m slightly traumatized from an old tractor backfiring and simultaneously bursting into flames and burning up. Then a couple weeks later a push mower turned flamethrower and burnt part of the fence.
That just about ruined my nerves.

    I’m that way with batteries.

I worked at a school bus retailer around the time of 9-11. I was paired with this giant who looked like Shrek. We went out into the field to try to revive an old school bus. He took the trailer that had the heavy duty charger on it that had its own engine. We hooked it to the dual batteries in the bus, let it run for a few minutes, then I hopped in to try to start it. It felt like a bomb went off under my seat, and Shrek, standing outside next to it almost lost his head. Both batteries exploded in dramatic fashion, and it blew the battery box to shreds. He got hit in the head with one of the battery tops, and it gave him a good gash. He was lucky he wasn’t killed or blinded.

I had a group 37 or whatever (60lb agm) under the passenger seat when I needed exhaust done on the CJ5. I guess the positive post found a spring when the guy went to move it in for the night. They saved the seat but kindly asked me to fix the battery and wires before he could work on it.
That makes a hand crank or blank shot gun shell sound a lot safer than this new fangled electric stuff.
But I do have a lot more respect for batteries now.

Batteries make hydrogen gas when over charging. My uncle had the same thing happen. Battery exploded when he was charging it on a big old truck on the farm.

In a pinch, most beer is neutral pH and makes for good impromptu eye wash. Btdt, ER complimented us on quick thinking. We were blitzed and Bud tall boys were all we had......
