OK, similar question to my earlier inside rear view mirror post. Does anyone have some photos of some original mid-60's CJ5 sun visors? Especially the mounting?

I'm guessing these were optional and may have required drilling like the mirrors did. I have the commonly available visors from a much later era; the kind that mount left and right and don't swivel. I'm guessing the originals were some sort of articulated arm sort of thing that attached to the corners of the window frame and actually worked (i.e., the ones I have now are OK if the sun is coming in at you from the front, but they don't swivel and so are worthless if the sun is coming from the side).

    Thanks!

guessing if there were oem visors, none of them were swivel...my 84 cj7 had visors, but they did not swivel...not even sure my YJ which was essentially new when I got it had swivel arms.

here is an classified add for some on the OWF, don't know if you can view this without being signed in:
    CJ Sun Visors Black

I would think this is about the right vintage....some pics from the add above...been thinking of adding these to my cj5, but its a bit awkward with the front hoop roll bar.

I bought new visors from the Jeep dealer in '69. They didn't swivel either. I kinda doubt they had ones that swiveled at that point in time.

Those are exactly what I have on there now. I really don't like them. You may be correct that those (or something like them) were what you got originally. I know I've seen photos of CJs with articulated arm visors. Of course, they may not be original.

None of them swiveled AFAIK. I've never seen such on a folding windshield. Possible someone's home-brew solution.

Hmm. Seems to be the consensus.

Would still like to see where others have mounted their visors...

With my top mounted wipers I didn't see a good way to even mount the visors I bought for my '66.

Not the best photo but this link: Modifications-Visors and Footman Loops will show you how I did mine. They work fine as far as they go (sun in the front) and they clear my electric wipers OK (I replaced the vac wipers with electric).

This link details the attachment: http://stankittycat.com/binky/images/visor_rev2.jpg

    Here's a better shot:

If I remember correctly, left and right weren't the same length originally.

Seems like a part number listing could verify this.

I think I saw that today while looking for info. Driver's side might have been shorter due to the rear view mirror (if mounted where the factory instructions specify).

On the '71 Renegade II the O.E.M. sun visors are left or right with the left being shorter for the off set rearview mirror mounting. Can't say about earlier models. OF course the aftermarket pieces are the same length left or right. mike

I don't remember sun visors until about '69 or '70. Proir to that, they were probably accessories. I've never seen an articulating arm style on a CJ.

Below is a shot of what one looks like. I got this years ago off ebay and have never seen them since. I don't know that this was meant for the CJs but it was definitely a Jeep part. I no longer have the box which would have the part number on it. I thought I had a pair of them but I tore my storage room and garage apart yesterday looking for a second visor, or a box (and some old rear view mirrors) but did not find any more visors. I could have sworn I purchased the one in the photo, then another one a bit later but it's been so long I can't remember anymore.

The chrome metal part has "PEERLESS NOV CO GRAND HAVEN, MICH" stamped on it. I had this one in my M715 until I let that go to a new owner, but I kept the visor thinking I might put it in the CJ5. It works very well with the 2 ball and socket joints. The black visor itself is a sort of Masonite type material, about 1/8" thick. It mounts with 2 screws in the part at the end of the arm.

Peerless Novelty Company was founded in 1917 and based in Grand Haven, Michigan. It changed its name to Stanco Metal Products, Inc. in 1997 with locations in Grand Haven, South Carolina, and New Mexico. The company specializes in metal fabrication.

Edit: I have contacted them to see if they know anything about this old visor. I think I'll ask them if they could replicate the arm assembly too. You could use any appropriate material for the visor itself if you had the arm...

Hard to say for sure as I haven't come across the pic in a while but that's at least similar to what I saw & it was on a CJ5.

I have considered obtaining a set of aircraft visors, some are the same sort of thing as this one.

I've looked at aircraft and marine sources too. I found 2 that looked interesting:

    https://www.rammount.com
    https://www.rosenvisor.com

The Rosen stuff looks great but is really expensive (as most anything aircraft related is, and a lot of marine/boating stuff is the same way). The Ram Mount components look promising though. I think you could put together a similar, workable visor arm/mount with that stuff. I'm still thinking about that.

As to the one vintage visor I found, I'd probably put them in if I had a pair of them. As it is I can't find a second one. I was sure I had a second one but so far, no joy in Mudville. Installing just one would disturb my "inner (Adrian) Monk." The nice thing about that old one is its simplicity. It would be pretty straightforward to reproduce I would think.
