1966 Cj5 Transmission Mount

    Hello, I have a 1966 CJ5 with the Dauntless V6, T86 transmission and Dana 18 transfer case. I have had to replace my frame because the old one was so rotten. I found a M38A1 frame to replace it with. This frame is set up for the F134 engine. So I cut the motor mount perches off the original frame and will use them on the F134 frame when I can figure out where they need to be located. Herein lies the difficulty. I can see where the crossmember for the transmission was mounted on the new frame. I assume it also had a T86 transmission and Dana 18 transfer case, and the I would be correct putting the crossmember back where it was on the military frame. I even saved the piece of wood that spaces the passenger side end of the crossmember down! The transmission mount was to dilapidated on my Jeep that I have no real idea what it used to look like. The military frame didn't have a crossmember on it. I have ordered the rubber insulator for the transmission mount, and the snubber for the transfer case. But I really do need a very detailed illustration of what the transmission mount should look like. I need to make sure I have everything I should have installed between the crossmember and the transmission. That way I can be sure the transmission and transfer case are in the right location, and I can then determine exactly where the engine perches go on the frame, and I can weld them in. Can anyone help with the detailed illustration of what is supposed to go between the transmission and crossmember? Maybe an exploded view? Pictures? Anything that would show me what belongs there? Thanks for any information you might have! Looking forward to heading the Jeep back to being solid and complete. :D

    M38A1 had a T90. I can hopefully crawl under mine in the next day or so and get some photos. Also I'll see if the manual has any good diagrams

    That looks like the part I have coming. I can see how it attaches to the transmission. But what attaches it to the crossmember?

    The T-86 is very much like the T-90, but you can't make any assumptions.

    I would appraoch this differently. I would first place the V6 mounts on the new frame and position the engine, transmission and transfer case in the proper location. I would then place the crossmember at the location determined by the mount on the transmission.

    The rub with that plan is, I have no real clue as to where the V6 mounts belong, but I do know where the crossmember was located on the new frame. I was just trying to take what I do know and use it to deduce what I don't know. :) Is there some information available that defines where the V6 mounts are to be located on a frame?

    I will measure from the front frame horn to the centre of the engine mount on my v6 cj5. I will have it for you tomorrow.

    I am not familiar with the T86 set-up, but this is how the Dauntless/T-14 mounts...

    That looks like mine. Same snubber for the D18. I will look at my trans mount again tomorrow to see if that's what I have. I think it is. I still don't see how the rubber insulator on the trans mount is held to the cross member...

    I think it's the big one in the middle on this picture. Two studs on the bottom attached with nuts under the cross member. Is that what you're asking about? The round one on the side I'm not sure.

    When I tore down the V 6 chassis it used the V 6, T 90, D18, used the same cross member as the F134, but was moved back on the frame about 6" and had a flat plate to move the off set at the donut about an inch or so to the outside. I can't remember exactly, but thought it was a strange set-up for a factory part. There were two sets of holes in the frame for the F 134, and more toward the rear another holes for the same cross member. Good luck

    Mmm ... was it a T-90 Rick? If so, it would be a converted chassis. The V6 only came with the T-86 or T-14. The T-86 looks and shifts like a T-90, but has a different case and some important internal differences.

    It was a T 86, but I put an F 134 in it with a T 90 bolted to the D 18 large index V 6 transfer case. I gave the V 6 and the T 86 to a friend that had a V 6, so yes it was a T 86 Tim.

    This for the frame horn location for motor mounts. Your T-86 trans has a "z" bracket that locates the trans to the rubber mount then to the cross-member.
