    Alright hivemind, new issue.

Was warming up the jeep yesterday getting ready for a ride. Wife was not watching the younglings, and I come back to find d the key turned to start while the engine is running. Something got fried by the smell of it, and now it won't start. Wont even click..

Battery is good, and I replaced the starter, still no joy. Any ideas?

Won't click? Starter solenoid, if your jeep has one. Or possibly the key switch, or its circuit.

Replaced the starter/solenoid. Going to try and bypass the ignition switch with a remote and see if that does the trick...

Key switch or circuit is what I'm thinking. He said the key was turned to start and the engine was running. Was the starter stuck engaged and fried something?

Switch is not spring loaded, or is broken. Hadnt replaced it yet.

Tried a starter remote, and that got the starter to click, but still no joy.

Any chance the battery needs charged? Bad cable connection? Eliminate things like that being the problem before getting too deep. Not a whole lot of things that could be wrong.

Did you look at the teeth on the flywheel to see if they are damaged? How did the teeth on the old starter look?

Teeth all looked good. No damage.
New point- no lights either. Looks like bad ignition switch?

What year and model Jeep? Any fusible links?

No lights and a click but no spin? Maybe low amps... Check both ends of all your battery connections, including the ground. And the cable connections at the clamps.

From your description it needs replacing anyway. That and definitely check all wires for condition, connections, etc.

I thought if one left the key in the ON/RUN/IGN position, the points would be energized and would eventually fry?

    Or is my recollection faulty?

In this case he said it was in the start position. And running.

You verified that the switch doesn't spring back from the start position, correct?

Pull your starter. see if the engine turns manually. Test starter. Test solenoid. Replace key switch if faulty. Check all wires for continuity.
