As an experiment, I tried painting the embossed areas and the '4 wheel'. Eventually I'll be pulling the body for metal work and paint so I'm using this as my learning curve. First I tried the side 'Jeep' areas. I could not find a stencil for them so I had ordered one of those rubber ink rollers. The roller was a piece of Chinese crap and kept falling apart. Next, to get enough to paint on the roller to work, it would run. Waste of time. I may later try the stippling brushes.

Next I moved to the '4 wheel' but I got the vinyl stencil off center and slightly crooked but it was too late to pull it off. Destroyed in the process of trying. My impatience! Since I had the cardboard stencil too, I tried it but took my time getting a level mark and registration mark for centering. However, as I had read before, even trying to take my time with the stencil adhesive, you cannot get crisp lines. They were right. Looks fine from 5 feet but like crap up close. Good thing it is experimental. Wife reminded me I should wait and order another vinyl stencil.

Then I moved to the Willys vinyl. But by now I had them wife involved. With the 2 of us taking our time we got it placed but had to pull both the back and top off and just working with the stencil. It requires lots of patience and semi stretching to get it placed around the embossed areas. It came out great but the paint did have some floaters but it works for now.

So my lesson from this is: vinyl stencils are by far the best. Easy to do on the non embossed areas but get horizontal and center registration marks first. Around the embossed areas, take your time and it can be done. As for paint, when I get to doing Wilbur (the wagon), I'll get a stencil and let the pros paint it and clear coat it all since that will be a nice paint job.

The "Jeep" part of the stencil was not used on CJ5s and the late 3As. The stencil with the "Jeep" was only used on the rear tailgate of Willys Wagons.
I've gotten crisp edges from posterboard stencils, but a spray gun works better than rattle cans.

Damn, now that you say that, I remember I was supposed to block that part out. Good thing it was practice, but I've gotta live with a while now. No getting it off with out messing it all up.

I had a friend paint mine for me years ago. He's a paint guy and did a great job. I gave him the stencil but he free handed it using the stencil only as reference I think.

It would be nice if someone offered a vinyl stencil, essentially a "negative" if the vinyl self stick 4wd decals that are offered on eBay. That, and the correct "late" decal (as mickeykelly pictured of his stencil) is hard, in not impossible, to find in seft stick vinyl. Anyone have access to a plotter that cuts vinyl decals?

I have a Silhouette Portrait vinyl cutter sold at craft stores. I bought mine from a coworker for $80 who upgraded to the larger model. I've made my money back. I make all sorts of cool things... Get one!

    For example.

That's a harbor freight item. Where have you placed it! I'm looking for a cup/phone holder for Willie.

I don't want to detract from the original topic, but I don't sell them, sorry.
