has anyone thought of using hydro boost for brake assist vs vac as most of us have power steering anyhow? Was working on a truck the company has and it got me thinking.

I have an Astro Van hydroboost on my shelf, but I have not gotten to installing it. However, my Jeep would normally use the typical vacuum booster that goes with hanging pedals, if it had power brakes. Pretty sure no one here has explored a hydroboost for the through-the-floor pedals.

Does seem like quite a process. I doubt it would fit under the floor in most cases too much stuff in that area.

Thats why I was looking at it. The booster is large and wouldn't easily fit. The easy no brainer was swinging pedals and a YJ setup.. Still was a hole lot of work in my 2A.. Totally worth it though.

I've seen a few CJ's with them installed ( generally Astro van donors) and also quite a few removed. Unless you've got some serious tires the boost is just too much for a light vehicle. The chronic testing the shoulder belts or face planting on the windshield gets old.

They work well, but only for single circuit brake systems. Modern VH44 equivalents are cheap on ebay.

Yeah, I read about that and you can apparently calibrate them.. It seems involved. Wasn't worth the effort when I could just buy new YJ stuff and basically "bolt" it in. I really only thought about it because my idea was to keep the floor pedals..

It would be cool to keep the floor pedals but Saftey comes before nice to have and stopping is a safety item

Mines a Gm Hydroboost setup with all four wheels having 11" Bendix brake shoes & drums. Works great. No 'Face Planting' . This is what I'm working on today. Post Note : I've been having on hell of a time adjusting & tightening the PS belt, If you can believe it ! Somethi'n so basic.... yet its been giving me fits ! :banghead:
I found why the 1984 GM adjusting bracket would not pivot . This hard line was holding it in place , by hitting the motor mount . I swear it was just like a 3rd hold down nut ! This is for my Hydroboost Pressure line. Ive got to adapt a flex line to this then problem should be solved . Monday Morning , when the Local hose shop opens. :waiting:

I’ve got 1979 CJ disks in the NTD30 up front and really fresh stock drums in rear. Manual brake dual master. If you jam it hard, hold on or eat windshield. Very powerful brakes. On a rig this light, I don’t even like vac booster. More to fail and I don’t see a need. Hydro would make it even more complex. K.I.S.S

I love the Geo setup guys have done recently. I would rock this setup in a heartbeat, if I had a blank canvas.

Jrobz23 I agree KISS and when I decide a build plan for my 65 I’ll either go Roxor front and master or geo with a d30 up front.. it’s good to hear that disks do ok without power.

There are remote vacuum power boosters that work with the frame mounted master cylinders. They were rarely used back in the early '60s on CJs.
As far as hydroboost units off GM vehicles, they are easy installs if you have swinging pedals and power steering. I have 3 units on the shelf, and they are the only thing that makes Wranglers rolling on 37's or larger stop in a safe manner. My brother used a hydroboost on is '72 Commando when he swapped a 454 into it. They are commonly used on built vehicles.

I imagine an 81” rig on 37s won’t have all too many stock components left. Definitely agree on that front though. I was more thinking in the stock/mild range.

The Spicer18 does allow us to cheat on obstacles that much larger rigs must fully clear. We can do much more with much less than modern magazine bro-dozers.

Boosted brakes are terrible with the engine off. Am I the only one who takes their jeep off road and occasionally drives down a hill with the engine off??

Hydroboost has a residual pressure reservoir that supposedly works for one or two applications. If the engine is spinning, would you not have both vacuum and power steering pressure?
