Hi there, sorting out what I have with my new-to-me CJ5 titled as a 71.

I’ll decode the vin in a bit, but I’m having trouble figuring out when Jeep switched from sheet metal screws for the VIN tags and started using rivets. Any information on when this changed over would be greatly appreciated.

Does the VIN start with J2, J3 etc? If not, it's a '71 or older and belongs in the Early forum, not the Intermediate forum. IIRC the Early VINs start with 8305 typically. Maybe the mods will move your post if it's an Early.

    First post! Welcome from Massachusetts!

    Vin Tag reads: 8305037 367561

    Thanks for the welcome!

Frame rail matches the serial number, so I believe the tub (or at least the plate ) matches the frame.

Pretty sure the corvette 350 isnt original though haha

1968 Model yr I believe was the beginning, the advent of the FMVSS , but there could be exceptions for jeep cj5 do to classification as universal and retitle of 67 to 68 which did happen

From what I've read, those rosebud rivets and the VIN plate on the dash are a no no to mess with, but I've heard back and forth about the data plate on the firewall inside the motor compartment.

For those who still have original, intact, riveted firewall data plates, are those rivets steel or aluminum? This deep into my search I think I'm not going to touch it anyway, but now it's bugging me not to know :D

Welcome from Michigan, it seems like I have seen those rivets somewhere, I can't say where, car restorers or some where, I recall thinking they were illegal to when I saw them. I was surprised when someone on this forum said the vin tags were put on with phillips screws. Good luck

The 64 I bought is definitely Phillips head screws and rusty ones at that. What remains of the frame serial appears to match so I think the VIN tag is likely original. I think back then VIN tags weren't taken as seriously as they are today.

Classic car suppliers have a similar ?
Unless your going for a 100 point show car(No FUN), use pop rivets, can always be changed later?
    Just my 2cents worth?

How is it a crime, I’ve heard this over and over like an old wives tale. Anybody that restores cars pops the rivets to repaint the car. Heck you can buy auto rivets all over eBay for re riveting the vin tags back on, from multiple suppliers.
