I bought this wiper motor kit but it doesn’t fit the area on top of windshield and only one tab to mount motor if it did fit. :n:

Did I buy the wrong motor or does this require modification?

The wipers seem real flimsy as well.

Top mount vacuum wiper. This was the unit used on most early cj5’s.

I made adapters out of 1" thick wood, screwed those to the windshield, screwed to motor to that. IIRC i had to shorten the tube & arm to get the proper stickout.

Thanks, that is somewhat helpful but the motor still doesn't fit in the space I have. I think you can see by the first photo I posted the motor sits against the windshield rubber and would not mount securely that way.

Maybe others have made a type of standoff mount? Using one bolt in the tab and nuts on the motor shaft to secure?

Looks like I'll try something like this over the weekend. I was looking for a "bolt on" solution, I know it Doesn't happen often with these old jeeps. But that's what this ECJ5 thing all about!!

I upgraded to better quality two speed wiper motors.

These wiper blades were the shortest I could find. I then had to shorten the arms and redrill the mounting hole to fit.

I can't in good conscience recommend those damn motors. They suck. I had an original Bosch in my CJ-6 that I assume was good for awhile but was impact damaged by the time I got it. I bought a new one and it lasted all of about 3 months of good weather and I would get about 3 swipes out of it before it started to smoke. I located the pictured motors Bosch WWF type after I got fed up with the style you have. These are heavy duty and even used have not missed a beat for me. The original one like yours had a bracket and stand off piece. The WWF motors have a hefty shaft that with a set nut can support the weight of the motor. The other end did require a post standoff but was easily fabricated from small steel tube. These are mounted upside down in my case because they were not figured into the roll cage design. I did a two speed wiper motor in my M38 last fall. Same style as I posted above and similar to yours but like you, I had to shorten the arms. Seems you can't get the adjustable arms anymore. I bought arms for a bottom mount CJ5 windshield and shortened accordingly. I also used the blades that came with the arms. I think I bought them through Morris 4x4. Price was reasonable.

I hate to deplete the stock of available windshields for our Jeeps, but ... for the price of a pair of those marine-rated good motors, you should be able to buy a 70-ish windshield frame with bottom mount wipers. The first CJs (and M38A1s) used vacuum motors. The top mount electric wipers are a pain - reducing your visual field and too exposed to the weather. To make them reliable, it seems you need the super-weatherproof and super-expensive motors designed for marine use. The later bottom mount wipers contain the linkage in the frame, and keep the motor covered. The replacement motors for these later windshields aren't perfect, but I suspect they last longer than the top-mounted wipers because they are better protected from the weather. And the '76-on CJ Jeeps use the same motor with a bit different bracketry (you can swap the brackets) so there is considerably more market pressure to supply a decent product. The '76-on windshields with the motor on the interior bottom side are another option - they can be made to fit, though they will not work with the '52-75 tops, since these later windshields tilt back more and are somewhat trapezoidal.

Thanks Tim. Good info for future projects. I’m kind of stuck with the top wipers for this one for now.

I've heard the linkage for the bottom mounts can be hard to find sometimes?

After using those cheap motors for years. You can really appreciate good wiper motors.
I can also say. After restoring and upgrading an old Jeep. It is still an old Jeep. Can't change that.
