ive dropped my axles off at an axle shop to have them re-geared. I got a call from them today, they wanted to let me know that the splendor ends and corespondent differential gears were both border lined stripped!

I’m out of town, but have asked them to send me some pictures. Either way does anyone have an idea of what may have caused this?

Does anyone know where I might be able to find replacement shafts?

    Thanks all.

While your axles are out of the tubes, sight through the tube to see if it looks straight. If your tubes are bent from rough landings, the shafts will be sitting in the side gears at an angle and can wear excessively over time.

Just re-read your post. The shop has the axles. I'd think they would notice that, but it wouldn't hurt to ask them to check tube/housing straightness.

Also, does it have a limited slip? Sometimes the clutches can wear grooves in the splines.

Thanks, I’ll have them check the tubes. No limited slip. I’ll post I Turel when I get them to share with you all. Don’t know where I’ll find new ones if needed.

The 30 spline flanged axle shafts in my rear Dana 44 were just plain worn out from many miles of use. Specifically the splined end of the shafts were worn down to a triangle shape, the side gears were also worn in a similar fashion.

I went with Alloy USA replacement axles.
You will need new spider/side gears, seals, bearings and possibly new retainer plates to complete the shafts for installation.

This Jeep has the offset differential. (1971). Are yours offset? If so did they make them up for you or have them in stock?

Unless you have a 71 offset axle housing. Flanged axles do not fit the older offset housings. I would find replacement axles or FF setup. Making this mistake cost me $4000.00.

The axle I referenced is a 30 spline Dana 44 from a 1974 CJ5. It is a centered axle with equal length axle shafts. I am using it in a 1970 Jeepster/Commando. The J/C has a Dana model 20 transfer case which is a centered output.
I don't know if Alloy USA has shafts for the offset axle, hopefully they will have something for you.
I went with this axle in my J/C because the original one was rare and also had bad axle shafts as seen here: Axle Woes
