When did Willys (or Kaiser) finally do away with the left hand threaded wheel studs on the driver's side? My '47 CJ2A has/had them, but my '68 CJ5 engine donor didn't. Now I found them on my '61 Wagon, which kind of surprised me. I assumed that they were a military thing left over from WWII.

Don't know if it was a military carry over. Lots of US made vehicles had left hand threads in the 50's. Passenger cars and trucks. mike

Yep, it was pretty common in the the days of old to have left hand wheel studs.

My guess is they went away on jeeps in the mid 60's, probably around the introduction of the V6.

My Jeep does not have LH lugs. My first truck was a '62 Ford, I figured out it had them after nearly twisting the lug wrench off and (nearly) breaking my arm

After almost ruining a wheel, and I 'knew' they were lefties but had a senior moment, I decided it was time to change them out. It would have just been a matter of time before it became a problem.

My '64 Tux has regular right-hand threads, from new. I had a '62 CJ5 with leftys.

I'm curious Greevesman, does your '64 have the carryover battery lid cover on the cowl?
The Tuxes were the first models to remove the lid, and there may have been other changes, like lugs too.

Thanks for all of the replies. I swapped out the lefties on my 2A a long time ago and am planning on the same for the Wagon. I was surprised to find them and surprised they were used for as long as they were.

According to the serial number mine was built in January 64 and does not have the lid on the cowl. Lugs left hand thread.
