In 1962 I was at my grandpa's house, following him around in the yard and surely getting in his way. I came across the subject ratchet out in the yard nearly buried in the grass. It had been there a while - long enough to be rusty and frozen. I gave it to him and said, "Look what I found!" He was glad I found it but disappointed it was rusted and unusable. He tossed it out and I asked if I could have it. I got a laugh and a yes and I was ecstatic.

So I headed home with my prize. On old guy in my neighborhood had showed me how to knock the rust off my chrome bicycle rims by using a wire brush and steel wool. I went after the ratchet to get the rust off. Much to my dismay it didn't really clean up as well as I hoped. My dad suggested I put 3-in-1 oil on the ratchet to see if it would break loose. I oiled it up, over and over, but no luck on getting it loose. So I put it in my dads paint cabinet.

Fast forward about 8 years when I began to work on my own stuff. I ran across it in the cabinet and shot another dose of 3-in-1 on it. I now had a socket which I snapped on the drive. I put it on a u bolt on my 59 Ford and much to my surprise it broke free and began to work. I continued to oil it up and it worked better and better. It became the prize of my tool box.

Over the years I used and used it. It finally began to skip a few gears once in awhile while tightening. I worked around that for a while and finally quit using it.

I was reading about Craftsman tool warranty on the Sears thread the other day. It made me think about the old rachet. I did a search on S-K 42470 and found a video on YouTube showing a guy taking one apart and cleaning it up. This fixed his but he said if cleaning didn't work that you could try a rebuild kit. I looked on Amazon and found one for about $60. I love the wrench but not that much. I wondered if the S-K website might have one cheaper. I looked up the ratchet and it is $140 retail. I looked for a rebuild kit and found a link that allowed me to order the part under warranty for FREE. So I did. Part arrived and I put in today. Here is the rest of the story...

    Original wrench.

    Disassembled innerbody assembly.

Broken spring and worn pawl teeth.

The new parts looked so nice. But I wanted the original look. So I disassembled the new innerbody.

Then I reassembled the unit using the original drive, selector and retainer spring along with the new internal parts. (The new retainer spring has larger ears on the end of the spring and did not fit my older tool.) S-K also included assembly grease.

This could not have turned out better. The rachet functions so smooth - better than it ever has - in both directions! :bananatool:

That's all I have to say about that

A good ratchet would be worth the $60 rebuild, awesome that you did it for free! I'll have to consider them if I ever need a new one, sounds like a great company to have parts available for that long.
