Mighty "purdy" welds there Terry. Glad to see you are still at it on the Jeep.

They look just like my welds except Tarry's don't have any splatter or blow out, have uniform overlapping, and appear to be strong with good penetration. Other than that they are just like mine. Oh, and Tarry's will probably hold metal parts together too.

Well after eating sawdust , sheetrock dust , paint fumes , playing with insulation , new windows and doors for about 2 years remodeling two houses I'm pretty much done other than the landscaping which I'm not planning on doing except the flakes around here that came out and quoted the projects have no Insurance or License.......even the 3 guys that do have it ..... after seeing the properties a month ago have yet to send a quote????Unbelievable!........

Anyway back in the shop working on my old Jeep CJ6 project........And the first task at hand is to re-acquaint myself in where I left off..........Oh Yeh! front axle and steering.......yep...... now I remember!! I've hung a lot of struts on Drag race cars that go straight most of the time and have that figured out quite well.........but getting involved with these 3 and 4 link front and rear suspension systems along with these Fox 14"-16" travel coilover suspension shocks adds another layer of thought and understanding to make sure the car and suspension geometry will all work as planned.........

No matter the type of car your still dealing with very similar constants like, squat & anti-squat , COG , instant centers , dive , Roll axis , Roll center Etc.........so although in my mind I think I know what I want but in reality I have to get it all mocked up in the chassis and then cycle it to see if it not only works on paper but also works within the confines given!!

First task is to built some form of set-up or mock up shocks that will allow me to set Bump, ride height and full droop.......Of course if I knew someone that had some old beat-up shocks maybe that would work .......but for sure I don't want to bang up the new ones so here is my solution:

First I milled down some 3/4" x 2"x 24" 1018 bar stock to about .700 x 1.700 wide which would act as an adjustable strut within a piece of 1"x2" x .125 wall rectangular tubing.......you also have to deal with the welded seam inside the tubing by relieving that area on the strut.........

The two mockup struts look like this as compared to the Fox shock...I still need to finish a little welding on the mount end .........and I will have to figure out some way of attaching maybe some plastic tubing / water pipe on to my mock up shocks to mimic the OD of the springs and shock bodys for clearance........but that will come.

Wow fun stuff happening all this time just a few miles away from me and I never knew. Great work and great progress. This has been great book the whole time not knowing if I would find a finished Jeep on page 25 or what. Now maybe I can work my way into a live viewing some day. I had a few predictions that have come true and a few more that still might. My biggest questions so far are have you picked out a driver's seat and will it fit your grandson? LOL

That's a good question and he asks me that all the time........and I just give him a dirty look................ Like I'm working on it Bud!

He is a busy little guy now at 8 yrs.......plays Ice Hockey Goalie 2-3 times a week........and when I'm not there to support him I get the dirty look..........

We have a lot of fun together........At the Drag Strip often enough he is also into shooting his Winchester .22 pump and loves to go target practice and I just finished refurbishing my old Higgins .22 so he already laid claim to wanting to fire it first.........Model Trains and riding / driving real Locomotives are another thing we both enjoy doing!...........oooh and now it's that Playstation stuff?

Yep I'll get back to the Jeep project..........it's work in progress.....still sorting out the steering , may now go to a reverse Saginaw steering gear box.......like out of the vans. Need to make room for other things up front like a track bar and sway bar.........so nothing is off the table until it all fits.

I got an old JC Higgins .22 pistol from my Grandpa several years ago. Actually came from Grandma as Grandpa has been gone for years now. Fun little plinker.

Sounds like a real kid. I try to keep ours busy enough learning, doing, and hands on something to not miss the video games but it doesn't work completely.
Steering, yes tough one and so many options all have some sort of compromise it seems. I don't know the vans but I know the early Bronco guys do a "4 x 4 x 2" conversion or something like that which involves getting a couple different boxes one is reverse geared the other has a long sector shaft for mounting above the narrow frame. The guts to the reverse one go in the long one for the best of all worlds box for EBs. I can get that info if you are interested.
Also I don't know how your 3 link with a panhard is laying out but I learned the hard way on buggy that double triangulated 3 bars (as viewed from above) with a panhard can make for some crazy handling during accel and braking torque.

Yep, all about Squat , Anti Squat , Anti-dive and making all those variables somewhat compliant .........you'll have to stop over some time.....sometimes another pair of eyes helps!

"Did" is the proper terminology and that was a long time back. I still have all the equipment and buildings etc but don't have any big plans at this point in my life. Most the stuff is logging railroad related and I probably had 300 books or so on that subject.

Yep, fortunately my Mom boxed up my first Flyer set I got as a kid and saved it.........I grew up with the Western Pacific RR in my front yard....The California Zephyr came by daily but I loved the freight trains , many years later after moving away she told me that it was still in the attic.......so that again sparked my interest.

As I traveled around the country on Business I would make it a point to map out free time to search local hobby & toy shops including train shows....that were within reach of the airport.......be surprised what you can find while traveling..

I kind of did that also. Especially Caboose Hobbies in Denver. The internet has sort of scuttled the train shows. Few are anything like they were 25 years back.
